Question...are employers mandated to offer health insurance to part time employess in the new law
My boss who has only part time workers is popping a vein because he thinks he's going to have to provide us all with insurance. He's just positive every small business in America is going to go under because of the evil Obamacare. Anyway is that in there? I read it, and didn't find anything that said that but then I have the attention span of a kitten in a room with shiny objects when it comes to things written in political-ese

1. I thought small businesses were getting subsidies and tax breaks...

to help provide insurance to their employees.

on edit: Your boss should have enough common sense to walk to a computer and google the law. He can read for himself rather than act like a chicken little.

2. I heard that too but is there anything requiring them to cover part time employees?
Like I said, he convinced he's going to go out of business. (he employs 10 part time employees..offers NO benefits)

4. I don't think so
You will be eligible for the exchange eventually, and probably get subsidies. I think employers with 50 or less employees are under completely different rules, especially part-time employees.

11. If he only has ten employees, he won't be required to do anything.
Here's a link: http://money.cnn.com/2010/03/22/smallbusiness/small_business_health_reform/

As I understand it, unless he has over fifty full time employees, he's not required to do anything, and if he did, he wouldn't be required to do anything until 2014. Under 25 employees, and he'll get tax credits if he decides to pay for insurance. Part time employees add up to full time employees based on hours--2 PTers working 20 hours would be one full timer.

Not sure what he's been listening to, but it certainly hasn't been to anyone who is telling the truth.

3. Does he only have 10 employees?
if so - he is exempted. Businesses under 50 employees are exempt, IIRC.

7. he is exempt - his employees will probably get some help
through subsidies if they aren't covered by a spouse's plan, parents plan, etc. If they are part time and this is the only job- they will most likely get large subsidies that will be very, very helpful.

8. While I think he'll be exempt, I'm not sure, but I am sure...
that he should consult his lawyer and accountant about it before popping veins.

(I suspect that if he does go out of business, it won't be because of healthcare.)

9. Think about this
See now I'm wondering how that's gonna work out.. I say it will work out GREAT..

Consider this: Who makes up a huge amount of the small business/franchise work force? College kids. If you now have a law that kids can stay on your insurance till they are 26, then I wouldn't think small business owners would even NEED to provide insurance for alot of employees. So all in all, would it REALLY be so bad?

15. The way employers count parttime employees is by FTE
so that an employer who has the equivalent of fewer than 50 FTE is exempt from coverage even if he/she employs more than 50 who wok less than fulltime. For example and employer with 60 half-time employees has an FTE of 30.

This doesn't mean he/she must provide insurance for part time staff. It just means that they must be counted to determine status re exemption.

13. employers exempt if fewer than 50 full time equiv workers
So exempt if fewer than 100 half-timers, 200 quarter timers etc. Requirement kicks in at 50 full time equivalent workers.

14. Employers with under 50 employees are exempt. No mandates apply to parttime help.
