DVD DRM row sparks user rebellion

Attempts to gag the blogosphere from publishing details of a DVD crack have led to a user revolt.

The row centred on a 'cease and desist' letter sent by the body that oversees the digital rights management technology on high-definition DVDs.

It requested that blogs and websites removed details of a software key that breaks the encryption on HD-DVDs.

The removal of the information from community news website Digg was a step too far for its fans.

As quickly as stories relating to the issue were removed, they were re-submitted in their thousands, in an act described by one user as a "21st century revolt".

For the most part, people who crack and share DVDs via toreent servers and P2P are not going to burn them to CDs and sell them. A lot of people use them as a way to preview DVDs before buying them.

I sometimes watch movies on torrent, but I have also bought dozens upon dozens of them when I liked them. The quality is not the same, and if you really like the movie you will buy it.

But- that's not what this article was about. Take a look at this part:

The hacker said he had grown angry when a HD-DVD movie he had bought would not play on his monitor because it did not have the compliant connector demanded by the movie industry.

Here, we have a case where a hacker BOUGHT a HD-DVD player, BOUGHT a HD-DVD, BOUGHT the hardware to display that HD-DVD, and then found he was unable to play back his legitimately purchased copy at all.

This is exactly what those of us who are against any and all forms of DRM have been saying would happen from day one. We've been trying to tell people that, if we don't start taking a stand against these sorts of "features" on our media, the day would come when only select people would be able to play back that media, even though the said media is being offered to everyone.

We were told it wouldn't work out that way. Well, it has. If Digg is smart, they'll create a haiku ala the DeCSS haiku epic, and that will be that.

(Yes- if you actually take the time to code it, the DeCSS haiku can be used to unlock DVD encryption. It's also completely legal to post, being in its entirety a traditional 5/7/5 haiku epic poem. :) )

You can still find good picture quality movies on p2p, but unlike mp3's, where the music quality goes down a little, consumers will tend to notice the picture quality difference in an avi file as opposed to a DVD.

That key is needed to make lawful backups of your media. Without that key they are denying you your RIGHT to fair-use.

The DRM provision of the DMCA nullifies existing fair use exceptions indirectly. Unfortunately, the copyright cartel feels that people don't really OWN what they buy anymore. In the case of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, if DRM has been cracked, the disc itself will force you to install a new DRM "software update" otherwise it won't let you play your HD-DVD or Blu-Ray Disc on your computer anymore.
If the RIAA/MPAA wants to treat us like this, why don't they stop selling their products and just rent them? Because that's more or less what they're doing with DRM.
