The Teabagger "movement" in one photo
Edited on Sun Mar-28-10 02:41 AM by CLANG

Unemployed seniors collecting Social Security and Medicare. But they demand smaller government and no handouts (unless you're white).

18. A great activist thing to do would be to setup a booth with a form to sign...
The booth sign will read something like Say No To Socialism...or Sarahnara Socialism (but that just might confuse those addled brains)

The form will be an agreement that they will turn into their Medicare cards and pledge to return every Social Security check back to the government.

Wonder how long before the booth would be shut down?

42. Most retirees "recoup" their personal input in a very short time
the SS "statement" sent out, has a grand total that YOU paid in.. Double it (if you want to include employer input..if you really think they would have given it to YOU, all those years)..

then just divide that sum by your monthly benefit check (expected or currently receiving)... you'll see that you are at break-even sooner than you would think..

46. the silly part, is the idea that people WOULD actually invest that 6.20% per check
Edited on Sun Mar-28-10 03:45 PM by SoCalDem
seeing as how MOST people live check-to-check...and most probably run out of check, before they run out of week/month:)

47. Well that I agree. It is the forced aspect which has actually done the most good.
Edited on Sun Mar-28-10 03:59 PM by Statistical
Personally once I setup my 401K and my monthly IRA contributions I eventually get use to that money "not being available".
Once setup my private investments work similar to Social Security. If I wanted to at retirement I could take all that money and buy an annuity which provides a guaranteed income for life (like SS). I likely won't because most annuities can be done yourself with conservative investments (T-bond ladders) but it can be done.

There are many flaws with SS but the fact that many people are hugely irresponsible with money means the "forced" aspect of SS is a good thing.

People without means beyond their working years will be a burden on the system. If SS was abolished SOME people would take that 12% (6% you, 6% employer) and "do the right thing" however a massive amount of people would not.

21. Every teabagger should be confronted that way, Vinca.
When you hear a senior citizen spouting the teabagger rhetoric, press them into turning in their Medicare card and have them buy their health insurance from the open market. I don't know if they can turn down their Social Security, but press them toward giving 100% of their SS checks to a charity.

If they don't need any stinkin' gubmint handouts, make them put their money where their mouths are. Maybe it will wake up some of these idiots as to how foolish they've been.

27. Another thing about these people....
As conservatives they all sat out the 1960s, and are trying to do the 60s thing now with their own version of kooky cloths and protests.

It's 60s envy (now for people in their 60s!), and the Right is plagued with it.

49. I'd like to circulate a petition at teabagger rallies...
One where they pledge their opposition to 'government programs', and vow to opt out of medicare and social security.

We'll video the participation.

We'll use a notary public.

We'll make it binding.

I think I have a new project.

It's obvious these books were never opened.

In I.T. we have books like that. "Learn Visual Basic 6 in 7 days". Absolutely untouched and absolutely useless.

These folks buy these big books and never even open them.
