Bear Cam. Before they leave the den, which will be soon, take time out
to watch Lily and baby, Hope.

http://www.bear.org/website/lily-a-hope/live-den-cam.html

I found this site by accident. I think someone, here, in the school discussions, posted a link, but I'm not absolutely certain.

The North American Bear Center put a web cam outside the bear's den this winter. Lily, the mama bear gave birth to Hope in January.

Lynn Rogers, of the Bear Center, goes out to see to Lily when necessary, e.g. when she took her radio collar off and it had to be re-attached, and when she managed to move the web cam and he had to re-position it.

With all the hatred out there these days, this is an oasis of peace. BTW - turn up your sound. Listening to Hope nurse is just amazing.

1. using technology to enjoy nature. no sci-fi writer ever worked this into a story
none that I am aware of at least (and I am kinda a nut on the subject)

Once again truth is stranger than fiction

12. Baby Bear got into trouble yesterday....check this out
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXs0Lu7Xv18

Dangling and a swingin'

Mama goes out several times a day now, but I don't think she strays very far from the den. Usually it's to rake some brush (fresh bedding) over to the entrance. Yesterday she raked what looked like an old gym shoe into the den along with the brush.

Anyway, while mom was out yesterday, Hope climbed out of the den. Mama showed up, pronto, and gave him a good talking-to.

Too cute!! :P

7. There is a grizzly bear documentary on Hulu worth viewing...
focusing on the current status of grizzlies in Yellowstone. After that moronic kid's tragic death in Alaska several years back, I looked at this one with some skepticism. Nonetheless, this guy seems to know the difference between what one might get away with in the wild (very little) and that with a hand-reared bear, which he actually has on a wildlife preserve. I've spent quite a bit of time in Yellowstone, but with few bear sightings, so I enjoyed this quite a bit.

Just go to Hulu.com and search keyword Expedition Wild.

8. Thanks... but just my luck!
I went to watch and the big bear is apparently laying right in front of (on?) the camera... so all I can see is a shot filled with black fur...GEEZ can't these bears find a decent director??!? ;)

I'll have to check again later. Thanks for the link!

25. LOL! I returned
Still nothing in the way of a picture (although big black bear has moved, now I am seeing den material) but one of the cubs is crying up a storm on my audio.

The funny thing about this is...last summer we had a black bear in our yard (nightly for a while) and she (he?) used to go on our back porch and forage around.

The one night my husband said the bear is on the porch, but when I looked out, all I saw was black, I said I can't see him--the damned bear was so close to the window, that I was looking at his or her fur (VERY CLOSE UP)
Scared the hell out of me lol

Did you check out the video clips section? No idea cubs screamed like that. Born and raised in PA bear country but learned more in the last few minutes than I ever knew. Thanks!

escaped. I saw that in real time yesterday.

<sigh> I don't get anything done anymore. Just sit and watch Lily and Hope.

16. Hi Kestrel. Good to see you. Being a vet and all
I know you'll find this interesting. I think the "dandruff" thing is some of the brush that clings to her back.

For a good view of Hope, check out the YouTube link above upthread.

Lynn, the bear guy, interacts with Lily with no problem. He was feeding her filberts and grapes while he re-positioned the webcam a few days ago. (You couldn't see him, of course. But he was talking to Lily all the while, and later they posted a blog about it.)

15. Bears... Don't think humans would have survived in the north without bear teachers
Just MHO, but I think we owe much to our clever, resourceful bear teachers.

You should hear the little guy screeching!

Edited to add: Oops, I guess it's a girl, not a guy.
