Texas Bd of Ed member: "they want to make it look like we are dumb morons"
I wonder why?

from the Globe and Mail (Toronto):

....(snip)....

Speaking of Biblical principles, didn't your committee delete reference to Thomas Jefferson, who actually talked about the separation of church and state?

That's not true. Look, down here there are these groups from the far left. Whatever we do, they want to make it look like we are dumb morons. They're very effective, dadgummit. Jefferson's name was taken out of a list of Enlightenment philosophers in world history because he didn't fit the period of the Enlightenment.

Did you have trouble with Jefferson's views about the separation of church and state?

No, that's wrong. We're not against the separation of church and state. But now we've gone so far to the other side you can't even have a prayer at a football game. You know, some schools barred the use of red and green at Christmas time because they don't want to be promoting religion. You see how ridiculous this is.

Why did you drop the word capitalism and instead label the American economic system as free enterprise?

It's the term actually required by state law, that we promote free enterprise in our standards. But to me, what allows us to grow and be great in a lot of ways is liberty and freedom. I like the emphasis on free market and free enterprise.

That's also where the word liberal comes from, meaning free man and free-thinking. But that's not a very popular word in Texas.

Well, I'm not so upset with liberals. But when you get way off to the left, that’s what I don't like. ...............(more)

38. My saying is
If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, swims and waddles around like a duck, then it's either a duck or a closely related waterfowl.

By the way Rachel Maddow did go into this during her show... but I am sure MSNBC is not national enough either.

30. Jefferson epitomized the Age of Enlightenment
What makes this truly funny is the Age of Enlightenment was a period in history when people threw off the yoke of religious superstition and replaced it with reason. Now the Texas board of ed want's to erase 2 or 3 hundred years of enlightenment and go back to their flat earth bullshit.

The "far left" doesn't have to do anything. All you need to do is give these morans an open mic and they'll reveal their grabastic nature for all to see.

32. I would argue that if we do nothing
they'll achieve their goals.

But hey... I just did work on the History of the Enlightenment, so this is why I am laughing so damn hard...

In the US it ended with Jefferson's generation.

In Mexico it went on for ONE MORE generation.

:-)

33. Actually we already have
Don McLeroy has been an embarrassment in Texas for some time now. Democrats in the Texas Senate killed Perry's reappointment of him as chairman of the board and he just lost the primary to another Republican so he'll be gone in a few months. It seems even Republicans think he's a moran.

19. We often spell that word "moran"
In honor of the pro-war demonstrator who proudly held up a sign that read "Get a brain! Morans," immortalized in countless reproductions all over the internets.

Oh, and "internets" is an homage to a certain former President of the United States.

39. the hysterical historical provenance of Moran is a thing of beauty.
I know, some find it "ridicilas" or "Un-Amerian," or even somwhat "socalist,"
but over time, the Tea Bagger Dictionary creates yet another great sign.

21. More words of wisdom from the Republican dentist
It surprised me that you dropped the word “democracy” as a description of the United States.

That's for accuracy: We're a republic, a constitutional republic. That's why a lot of states are challenging Obama's health-care legislation on a constitutional basis, not on a democratic basis. We're a constitutional republic, so those challenges are not on how many people voted one way or the other.

------

But didn't the increase in government come about because free enterprise failed during the Depression?

If I weren't a dentist, I think I'd enjoy being a teacher, because that's a great question to examine in history class. I'm not an expert, but basically a lot of people think we would have come out of the Depression sooner had it not been for the government interventions.

44. They're also mad at Jefferson because of property rights.
In the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson revised Locke's original ideas about unalienable rights by changing "property" to "pursuit of happiness" in order to avoid a colonial catfight about slavery. He knew that if he said "property" in a document that was basically a moral-political thesis, then people would think that the government was officially supporting the slave trade, as this was the most contentious "property rights" battle of the time period. He wanted a harmonious document that covered ALL points of view, so he decided to change it to "pursuit of happiness", and he wanted to rob the British of a chunk of their propaganda--in essence, they couldn't use the document to whip Britons into a righteous anti-slavery fury, thus reducing the support for the war at home.

To this day, the people who value property over all else (and who, if possible, would probably love to restore American slavery) are still pissed at Jefferson over that one. The resentment over his ideas about Separation of Church and State are mostly just a convenient vehicle to convince ignorant voters that Jefferson wasn't a very good Founding Father. We all realize that conservative leaders, by and large, don't REALLY care about God. They wave God around just like the bloody shirts they waved after the Civil War; the purpose is to enrage their followers and keep them pouring money into the machine, not to honor God. Only a naive fool would ever think they are sincere. Sincere people don't make it into Republican leadership positions.
