I wanted historic Health Care and all I got was this MANDATE.
That's more to the point. Victories are short lived. Mandates are for the rest of your life.

9. Hey, the real sunshine comes when the mandates start |
|
That's 2014. There will be many people who don't understand that they're not getting free healthcare but somewhat subsidized health insurance. There will be some weeping and gnashing of teeth, especially if the insurance industry pushes premiums sky high in the next three years, which they most likely will.

7. Yes, mandates can *never* change. |
|
:eyes:
Do you seriously, realistically believe that you can snap your fingers and make the insurance industry go away overnight? And when unemployment is already at record highs, what do you think terminating an entire job sector would do to the economy? Sure, we all hate the millionaire execs, but their are many paper pushers just trying to make a living.
I see us moving to Medicare for all, but in a way that won't put the nail in an already sputtering economy -- a gradual transition and we've just taken the first step.
Since you're obviously an expert, how did health care evolve in other countries? Was there an established insurance industry, or was it always state run? What model should we follow in getting what you want? How would that work?
As far as mandates, how is health care paid for in other countries? Would you like a tax increase instead of a mandate? It's NOT going to be free. Someone has to pay for it.
I am an uninsured person with multiple pre-existing conditions, so don't rush to call me an industry apologist. The situation sucks and I experience that firsthand every day of my life. Is this bill what I wanted? No. Did it go far enough? No. Was it a foot in the door to change the system? Yes. It ended 30 years of gridlock.
The bill is passed. It's done. Perhaps it's time we stop criticizing and being negative about what was done and move forward to trying to make it better. Nothing is set in stone. New additions and revisions can be made to legislation as we go on.

10. Has the mandate to pay Federal taxes ever changed since it was passed? |
|
For many years in this country, the idea of taxing wages was considered wrong. The idea was that a person was making a trade of his time and abilities for pay and that this was not "income" but trade. It wasn't until the early 1900s when that "trade" became "income" and was considered taxable. You think we'll ever see a return to the idea of "trade"? You think the IRS and the Federal Government are going to give up the trillions they get from us?
Now, ask that question about insurance mandates.

11. And just how do you propose we run the country? |
|
No, I don't think we'll go back to "boom times" of the early 1900s. As I recall, life wasn't all that great for many Americans. I'll gladly pay taxes on my wages for public roads, schools, public safety, libraries, etc.
Perhaps I've missed something. Are you a libertarian?
BTW, you also didn't address any of the other questions I asked/

12. I'm following one thread of logic at a time. |
|
The most important issue was the title of your post which implied that mandates could be changed or rescinded. My question to you was once a mandate is in place, what are the chances of its being rescinded. I gave you the example of the IRS. I hope that was sufficient to answer the question.
I did not go off on other tangents with you because my one and only point was that the mandate is here to stay. That's why the mandate had to be fought BEFORE it passed. Now that they have an automatic money stream from us to the insurance industry, they're not going to stop that.
