Edited on Mon Mar-29-10 08:47 AM by SolidGold
The word Patriot, its history, and its principals used to mean a lot to people in this country. Over the last 2 or 3 years the right has twisted this term to be anyone who opposes the government (when dems are in power). Half of these people or more are drooling buffoons. They are essentially sheep on their way to the slaughter following lock and step with the demagogues that fuel them.

If someone tells me they are a patriot or calls people 'true patriots' you can safely assume its a group of ignorant white people over the age of 35 who skipped or ignored history class all through school. You can also safely assume that they just found out about the constitution after they were whiping their asses with it for 8 years.

Patriot no longer means someone who's for their country and their fellow citizen, patriot now means you're a puppet buffoon of the whitewing agenda.

32. Made that up?
I'm not saying some I'm some sort of special patriot called a "liberal patrriot", I'm a PATRIOT who also happens to be liberal, thus disproving your utterly nonsensical and frankly insulting broadbrush post. I didn't "make up" anything.

Your OP sucks. So does dubstep, but that's beside the point. ;)

Look, you say one thing but mean another - you can't just slam a word on the front of patriot and make up a new understanding of what it is.

Besides that if you actually knew the definition of patriot you would understand that affixing the word liberal to the beginning of it makes no fucking sense. You're the exact type of person I'm talking about in my post. You call yourself a patriot but you don't even know what the word means!!!

Your opinion is noted and laughed upon :)

"I am a liberal patriot, a progressive patriot."

No, you're an ignorant person who doesn't know what the definition of patriot is. By ignorant I mean exactly that, a person lacking understanding.

43. A patriot is a person who loves and supports his or her country.
I am - by definition - a patriot.

A liberal is a person who favors progress and reform.

I am - by definition - a liberal.

Thus I am - again, by definition - a liberal patriot, just as I am a balding patriot, a green-eyed patriot, or a vegan patriot. If you choose to consider me ignorant or moronic in order to inflate our obviously overblown sense of self-importance, so be it. Your opinion has been noted and rejected by the vast majority of posters, none of whom are moronic in my eyes, even though I've fought with many of them before.

Your attitude and demeanor will see you tombstoned soon enough. :hi:

46. This isn't how english works sadly.....
But if you keep wishing maybe they'll ban me for pointing that out to you. Somehow I doubt that.

If they did ban me I guess that would make me a banned patriot? Perhaps right now I am a SolidGold Patriot and when I get on youtube I'm a youtube patriot. Perhaps since I like video games that makes me a Metal Gear Patriot. I like to eat a lot of whole grains, so perhaps I'm also a whole grain patriot.

Do you realize how stupid that sounds and how very little sense it makes? I'm guessing you don't. Sorry I had to point that out to you but it will help you not look like a baffoon in public.

Also, just because people agree with you - doesn't make you right. I'm positive lots of people agree with the "True Teaparty Patriots" that THEY are in fact the REAL patriots. So does majority agreement make it so?

51. You're laboring under the misconception
that the antecedent is being used to redefine the word; "liberal" does not redefine "patriot" any more than "red" redefines "car." I am a liberal patriot; i.e. a liberal who is a patriot. The first does not change the second any more than the second precludes the first, as you would contend that is does.

You're also convinced that you've redefined the word "patriot." You have not.

Those who would endeavor to avoid looking a buffoon in public would do well to learn how the word is spelled. ;)

>I'm positive lots of people agree with the "True Teaparty Patriots" that THEY are in fact the REAL patriots. So does majority agreement make it so?

Sadly, the only person who seems to agree that the Tealiban are the real patriots is YOU, as you've allowed them ownership of the word, thus yielding the field to your enemy. I shan't give them that consideration.

In this thread, I've seen you display an ignorance of simple adjectives, assert that ingratiate and ingrate are synonymous, and argue that the popular usage of a word by a small group changes the definition of that word. You know how the loudest guy at the bar is usually the most ignorant fuck in the room? Do you see where I'm going?

56. The adjective supplies more information about the noun.
It does not redefine said noun. Thus "liberal patriot" describes a patriot who is liberal. Simple stuff.

"Tall person" describes a person who is tall; it does not mean that those who are not tall are no longer described as persons or that "person" has been redefined.

Please reread the post. You can look up the word I used in any online dictionary if it is not familiar to you.

My opinion is not a penis, either. An opinion has a much different function than a penis, and is located somewhere else on the body. I can see that you are having trouble with word definitions, but that's OK. DU welcomes people with all sorts of disabilities.

Edited on Mon Mar-29-10 08:58 AM by SolidGold
You must be boring as fuck at parties taking everything so seriously. Next time you think someone misread perhaps you should revisit what ingratiate and integrate mean.

Let me just clarify this for you and the original person accusing me of being a freeper cause I have a low post count - regardless of your post count your opinions are all equal to me. If you find more value in someone with a higher post count then don't reply to me and don't assume I'm here to make friends with people. I'm strong willed, heavily opinionated, and won't pretend to be someone else to make you feel better.

31. Here's the deal at DU:
You post. Other DUers reply. You don't get to tell me or anyone else not to reply to your posts. That's how it works. You may not like my replies, and that's OK with me.

I do take things seriously when the topic is serious. I take patriotism seriously. In other threads, I use humor to make my point. This is not one of those threads.

I don't care about post counts. I started here with a zero post count, too, as did every other poster on this forum.

Finally, integrate and ingratiate do not mean the same thing at all.

They throw around a lot of words and talking points they have no clue what they mean. The have their own coded language that has evolved over the past 30 years...dog whistles and catch phrases they throw around that feel good and cover up the true intentions of the more sophisticated of the lot.

Isn't it something that in their conveluted world that the word "patriot" went from being someone who supported the government no matter what (including disastrous wars for profit and the fleecing of the treasury) and all of a sudden (to be specific 12 noon January 20, 2009) it means being obnoxiously defiant.

22. I feel that I am patriotic, but I never used the work "patriot" to describe myself.
Maybe it is because I have always felt that the word "patriot" should be reserved for those like Nathan Hale who gave the supreme sacrifice for the founding of our nation.

As a small symbol of my patriotism, I always displayed a small American flag decal on the window of my car. After September 11, 2001, I lost some of my desire to do that, since there were so many foolish characters who fastened small cloth flags to their car antennas, only to have them eventually fall off into the streets where I would occasionally find one and disposed of it properly. I understand the point of the original post, but I can also see how many DUers would disagree with it as well

A patriot is defined as:

"one who loves his or her country and supports its authority and interests"

I support our country and its interests most of the time. I wouldn't call myself a patriot because I do not hold a fervent drive to support all government mandate or officials mindlessly.

The worst defect of patriotism is its tendency to foster and impose this common mind, and so to stifle the innumerable germs of liberty. – J.A. Hobson

2. Patriotism and War:

At the bottom of all patriotism is war: that is why I am no patriot. – Jules Renard

No other factor in history, not even religion, has produced so many wars as has the clash of national egotisms sanctified by the name of patriotism. – Preserved Smith

Naturally the common people don’t want war . . . Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders . . . All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism. – Hermann Goering.

3. Patriotism and Religion:

Patriotism is a kind of religion; it is the egg from which wars are hatched. – Guy de Maupassant

God and Country are an unbeatable team; they break all records for oppression and bloodshed. – Luis Buñuel

To be patriotic, hate all nations but your own; to be religious, all sects but your own; to be moral, all pretenses but your own. – Lionel Strachey

When a dog barks at the moon, then it is religion; but when he barks at strangers, it is patriotism! – David Starr Jordan

4. The American Syndrome:

If you have a weak candidate and a weak platform, wrap yourself up in the American flag and talk about the Constitution. – Matt Quay

How much longer are we going to think it necessary to be “American” before (or in contradistinction to) being cultivated, being enlightened, being humane, & having the same intellectual discipline as other civilized countries? It is really too easy a disguise for our shortcomings to dress them up as a form of patriotism. – Edith Wharton

The 100 percent American is 99 percent an idiot. – George Bernard Shaw

Treason is in the air around us everywhere. It goes by the name of patriotism. – Thomas Corwin

47. "I hate patriotism! I can't stand it. It's a round world the last time I checked." - Bill Hicks
More from Hicks:

ON PATRIOTISM:

Did you watch the flag burning thing? Wasn't that great man? Boy everybody showed their true colours then didn't they?....Scary... People just flipped, they reacted like The Supreme Court approved of flag burning, know what I mean?

" Does that mean we have to burn our flags?.. They said that we ha-"... NO NO NO NO NO NO, they didn't say that. They said that if someone wanted to burn a flag, he perhaps doesn't need to go to jail for a year...Pretty harsh on their part huh?

"They said we should bur-".... They didn't say that, they didn't say that, they didn't say that

"Does that mean I have to go and -"....NO NO NO NO NO NO NO... Listen, read , think, calm down, relax, SHUT THE FUCK UP

"Well I don't get it..I don't wanna burn my flag"....THEN DOOOOOOOOOOON'T.

People snapped, they were like "Hey buddy, my dad died for that flag"

"Really?...I bought mine...They sell 'em in K-Mart..."

"yeah..He died in Korea for that flag"

"Wow, what a coincidence. Mine was made in Korea... the world is THAT big man..."

No-one, and I repeat NO-ONE has ever died for a flag. A flag is a piece of cloth, they might have died for freedom, which, by the way, is the freedom to....Burn the.. fucking flag you see??..Burning the flag doesn't make freedom go away, it's kinda like Free-dom ok?..ok.

And they've had 4 cases in this country's 200 year history, so it's not that big an issue. One of the hotter smokescreens they've put down the pipe. I don't wanna burn a flag, but what business is it of mine if you do?

Is it my business if someone wants to..Is it?...NO

Is it my business what other people read or watch on TV? NO IT'S NOT...THANK YOU

You see, when we talk these things through, it becomes a little clearer doesn't it? That's called logic and it'll help us all evolve and get on the fucking spaceships and get outta here.

57. Actually, that's probably boxing...
The whole point of which is to inflict pain and punishment on another human being.

Football's point is to move a ball from one end of the field to the other. Pain is incidental, not the entire point.

It's getting to be sort of wimpy anyway...can't grab here, can't hit there, can't hit within this or that distance...

Although it's nice to see all those nicely formed football player asses in spandex.

In any event, I'm a self admitted caveman. Er...I mean, cavegirl :7

63. The Right has, over time, appropriated the term, "Patriot".
I see no reason to cede it to them entirely.
