Census caught in anger toward Washington
Officials worry low response rate is a form of protest
By RICHARD S. DUNHAM and MEREDITH SIMONS
WASHINGTON BUREAU
March 27, 2010, 7:51AM

Texas is counting on the 2010 Census to deliver four new congressional districts, four new Electoral College votes in presidential elections, and millions of dollars in additional federal aid. But, as some elected officials are starting to worry, Uncle Sam can't deliver anything to the rapidly growing Sun Belt state unless Texas residents deliver their forms back to the government.

As of Friday afternoon, only 27 percent of Texas households had filled in and returned their census forms — well below the national average of 34 percent — according to computer data from the U.S. Census Bureau. In Harris County, the response rate is 23 percent. Houston's returns are running at 21 percent.

Contrary to historical trends, some of the toughest challenges facing the agency responsible for measuring the nation's population are not from counting the traditionally undercounted groups such as African-Americans and Latinos. Instead, a new and growing threat to an accurate national head count is coming from anti-government conservatives who may not fill out their forms to protest against “Big Brother” in Washington.

“There's a general distrust of the federal government at every level, starting with Congress and the president, all the way down to executive branch agencies,” says Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Midland.

<<<<<snip>>>>>

Criticism from Ron Paul
Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., began the barrage last year when she asserted — incorrectly — that the information reported by Americans could be used for nefarious governmental ends, such as imprisonment in internment camps.

Earlier this month, Texas Rep. Ron Paul voted against a congressional resolution asking Americans to participate in the census.

“The invasive nature of the current census raises serious questions about how and why government will use the collected information,” the Lake Jackson Republican recently said. “It also demonstrates how the federal bureaucracy consistently encourages citizens to think of themselves in terms of groups, rather than as individual Americans. ”

the fact that Lieberman is a Senator even though I didn't help put him there.

It is the whackos in TX that I had in mind, and obviously that doesn't include you.

Keep up the good fight in getting Lieberman out. :)

I lived in Texas for a couple of years back in the 70's and in spite of the extreme right folks, we met a lot of really great people. Any state that could give the world an Ann Richards has to possess a fair amount of sanity.

This is a win-win situation for the evolving population of America. I hope, hope, hope they are serious. If they officially don't exist, that would be a good thing as far as getting more representation for women, gays and minorities in this country.

Letting their kids die right before their eyes because they are too stupid to know what is good for them. These tea gaggers deserve every single thing they get.

7. Bachmann, Beck and the right wing would like to bring back the original census questions...
In the first censuses one of the questions was "How many slaves to you own?". Right wing, tea bagging nitwits always want to go back to the 'good ole days' like the days of slavery, a black being 3/5ths of a human, only white men could vote and own property, and on and on. They also probably love those spiffy suits with the cool headwear. Notice how they love to bring signs showing people being hung, just like the KKK used to regularly hand innocent black people to death, while crowds all gathered around taking pictures and admiring the fact that they just committed murder. Ahh, but they were also 'good' Christians too, just like conservatives and tea baggers 'claim' to be.

It's ironic how right wingers are protesting the census and many won't be returning them. Then when they are not counted by the government they will get even less representation than they have now, further enraging them. But maybe that's what they want. They whine about not being represented, and yet complain about the system our founding fathers created to ensure everyone was represented...

21. And what's really funny -- this census hardly asks anything at all
As a genealogist, I found it quite disappointing. Some questions on previous censuses that were NOT in this one:

Where were you born?
Are you a U.S. citizen?
Anyone crazy live here?
How much is your property worth?
Ladies, how many children have you had? How many still living?
Can you read and write?
How long have you been married?
Is there a radio set in the house?

There has been a census taken every ten years since 1790. Why these idiots are suddenly freaking out about it now is beyond nuts.

Attention residents of UT, ID, MT, WY, ND, SD, NB, KS, OK, TX, MS, AL, GA, SC, TN and K! Do NOT fill out your Census forms! If you do, you put your family at risk of being "reeducated" by the federal government. ACORN and the Obama Youth Brigades will be using Census data to do whatever it is that scares you most! Remember, real patriots don't trust the government, and don't complete their Census forms!

36. But that's just it:
the states I listed are the ones that have been the most reliably Republican. If Democrats in those states don't fill out their Census, either, then they might lose a seat or two! If Tennessee actually gains seats, which it might, you can count on the Republicans in Nashville making sure they are Republican.

28. Had a curious encounter with a census worker two weeks ago....
She pulled into the driveway, my two dogs ran out into their (fenced) yard to announce her arrival (German Shepherds, not even two years old and they're sweethearts). At first I didn't know who she was, and must have looked at her with some suspicion.

She, however, actually looked a little scared. Eyes darting back and forth, looking like she wanted to jump back in her truck and get the hell out.

Handed me the form and explained it, then nervously asked if there were any more residences to the rear of the property (my land goes back 1600 feet). I said no, and she gratefully leaped into her truck and sped away.

These people are scared, and I suppose I can't blame them.

Oh, and I'm in Western Mass. Can't even imagine how scared they might be in the more "red" areas of the country.

PS...filled it out and mailed it back the next day.

31. What Texas needs is more Democrats in the legislature for redistricting.
The only reason Texas has a majority of Repukes now is because of DeLay's criminal redrawing of Congressional lines in 2003. But Texas-haters will have to eat their words ere long when Hispanic, African-American and free-thinking white voters become the majority in Texas. We're almost there. This voting bloc is only one or two elections away from control, and should finish off the Know-Nothing Republicans in Austin and Washington, once and for all.

The Bushes and the Karl Roves are responsible for the Know-Nothing Republicans now in control because of lies, theft and character assassination. They did evil to Texas, they did evil to America. Just remember .... neither the Bushes nor the Roves are native Texans. These people aren't products of the State of Texas - the moved here and raped the state. Old man Bush only won election in Texas from a congressional district of millionaires and was rebuffed twice for the Senate. George W. lost his congressional race out in West Texas. The only reason he was ever elected governor in '93 was because Poppy had just been defeated for re-election the year before and Texas was giving him some twisted consolation prize. Of course, Rove's smear campaign against Ann Richards helped, as did the naked pandering to gun-lovers with the concealed carry law. Everything about his tenure as governor was smoke and mirrors. I was horrified at the time to watch the national media give this yahoo a pass all the way through the Supreme Court. I blame the media for George W. -- they knew he was incompetent.

I live in Ron Paul's district, which is overwhelmingly anti-government ... sooooo, if all these Paul supporters don't fill out a census form ... the prospects are delightful!
