Man Charged With Threatening To Kill Rep. Eric Cantor
Man Charged With Threatening To Kill Rep. Eric Cantor
Justin Elliott | March 29, 2010, 12:22PM

The U.S. Attorney in Philadelphia released this statement today:

PRESS RELEASE

PHILADELPHIA - Today, a two-count complaint and warrant was filed charging Norman Leboon with threatening to kill United States Congressman Eric Cantor and his family, and threatening to kill Congressman Eric Cantor, who is an official of the United States, announced United States Attorney Michael L. Levy and FBI Special Agent in Charge Jan Fedarcyk. As set forth in the affidavit to the complaint and warrant, in or about late March, 2010, Leboon created and then transmitted a YouTube video to Google over the internet, in which he threatened to kill Congressman Cantor and his family. No harm came to the Congressman or his family as a result of Leboon's threats.

"The Department of Justice takes threats against government officials seriously, especially threats to kill or injure others," said Levy. "Whether the reason for the threat is personal or political, threats are not protected by the First Amendment and are crimes."

INFORMATION REGARDING THE DEFENDANT

NAME ADDRESS AGE
Norman Leboon Philadelphia, PA 33 years old

1. I applaud this arrest (based on what I read).
But don't stop there. Go after all the crazies who threaten to attack people for political reasons. Most threats by far are coming from the Right.

It seems that people are free to make death threats against Obama w/o repercussion. At worst a person might get a visit from SS.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3r0KJm0YlI

Here is a video of an old man saying Obama was acting like Hitler and how he wanted to take his gun and go to DC. Grassley talks to him like he is a responsible adult for making that threat.

It is a double standard. Threats of violence and treason should be illegal no matter what the political views of those making them. Right now it seems the right has a free pass and they shouldn't.

or even the farthest of leftists, for that matter (from the TPM link):

During the video NORMAN LEBOON made the following statements:

"My Congressman Eric Cantor, and you and your cupcake evil wife..." "Remember Eric...our judgment time, the final Yom Kippur has been given. You are a liar, you're a Lucifer, you're a pig, a greedy fucking pig, you're an abomination, you receive my bullets in your office, remember they will be placed in your heads. You and your children are Lucifer's abominations."

Aside from the profanity, it sounds like something you'd expect to hear from the born-again taliban who just got rounded up for plotting to kill law enforcement officers. It doesn't make sense, and that's why it's called 'crazy.' Good luck trying to pin this on Democrats, you in the corporate media, RW noise machine & repukes!

14. LeBoon -- is this the same guy?
Edited on Mon Mar-29-10 11:46 AM by EFerrari
One of the allegations against Verizon in the lawsuit is made by Philadelphia resident Norman LeBoon, who says after he read of the alleged surveillance of US citizens, he began asking Verizon if his landline communications were being shared. LeBoon says he eventually spoke with “Ellen” in Verizon customer service, who told him, “I can tell you, Mr. LeBoon, that your records have been shared with the government, but that’s between you and me.… They are going to deny it because of national security. The government is denying it and we have to deny it, too. Around here we are saying that Verizon has ‘plausible deniability.’”

ETA: Looks like this guy is Norman Sr. but the accused doesn't use that designation.

24. Whoa!!! Interesting that he made an allegation against Verizon.
Edited on Mon Mar-29-10 12:01 PM by Raksha
It also occurs to me that the Supreme Court recently came down with an utterly bizarre judgment that there is no constitutional right not to be framed by law enforcement or the government. It could be that Cantor desperately needed a distraction from his previous trumped-up accusations, so he decided to go after a political enemy in his district.

Edited to add: I clicked on a Google search link and had a quick look at the article titles it brought up. It appears the Leboons (father and son) are Islamic extremists and fanatical anti-Zionists. So even if Verizon was eavesdropping on them, it appears there was a credible reason for it.

There's a lot of nutty stuff by Norman "Sr." if you search his name. And then I found this pix page,

"My son Norman LeBoon Jr. by prophetmedhi":

22. Contrast DU's reaction to this arrest...
...with Free Republic's reaction to the arrest of the "Christian" extremist militia members who allegedly were plotting to kill police. Cantor is a central political foe of ours but we are quick to condem threats against his life. It's a very different picture from the freepers who are blaming our government for the arrest of those plotting to kill cops.

28. This guy Leboon sounds mentally ill. From the official record:
"LEBOON stated he had made over 2,000 videos in which he made threats.
(c) LEBOON further stated that he is the "son of the god of Enoch" and that his father speaks through him. LEBOON stated that Eric Cantor is "pure evil"; will be dead; and that Cantor's family is suffering because of his father's wrath."

There is no mention of the gun incident that took place, or if there is a connection of any kind...or did I miss something?

Cantor and his family are fortunately spared this wacko as a threat to their lives.

So kudoes to the feds for taking him off the streets. From what I'm seeing, Leboon was a real danger to Cantor and there's no way in hell I want sto see any violence perpetrated on any Republican.

39. So far there seems to be no connection of Leboon the Loon
to the bullet shot near Cantor's office.

snip* Any connection between Leboon and the randomly fired bullet found in Cantor's campaign office in Virginia last week? The feds are making no such connection. Assuming Richmond police are right that the bullet was random, could Leboon have made his video after that incident in Virginia became public? That appears unlikely: Leboon told authorities on Saturday that he made the Cantor video "approximately three days" before. Cantor's press conference announcing the bullet in his office was on Thursday.
