I was just waiting for these assholes to blame Librels.

This is from Ross Douthat's column.

In reality, the scandal implicates left and right alike. The permissive sexual culture that prevailed everywhere, seminaries included, during the silly season of the ’70s deserves a share of the blame, as does that era’s overemphasis on therapy. (Again and again, bishops relied on psychiatrists rather than common sense in deciding how to handle abusive clerics.) But it was the church’s conservative instincts — the insistence on institutional loyalty, obedience and the absolute authority of clerics — that allowed the abuse to spread unpunished.

3. Really? My molestation took place in the very early 60s
by a much older priest. Whoopsie, Ross. Wrong again!

4. As if this behavior hasn't been going on for centuries.
In fact, the only reason we can talk about it now is that "permissive sexual culture". Do people think sexual abuse only started happening recently? No. Only recently do victims feel able to speak up about it.

7. My Dad's happened in the '40 and it involved several children and..
priests. The families were shut up and the children expelled from school.

9. Actually, that would be more like 380AD, when the Roman Empire
re-formatted as the Roman Catholic Church.

11. After 1700 years, what's a generation or two?

On Edit:

You're right, of course. It is a constant astonishment that people don't recognize it. The church structure bears NO resemblance to either the Jewish synagogue structure it was supposedly derived from, or the community churches of the first couple centuries. Its hierarchy does, however, strongly resemble the hierarchal structure of the Roman Empire (where, of course, the emperor was the honorary high priest of Jupiter). The names of the ranks - archbishop, bishop, etc. - are derived from the ranks of the priests of the Temple of Jupiter.

The Roman Empire simply transferred the state religion from the pagan Temple of Jupiter to the up-and-coming Christian church, and imposed that authoritarian structure on the Christians to keep them under control.

12. Thanks, Both: I Just Picked a Number At Random.
I apologize to the catholic church for implying it was being evil 200 year or so before it actually started being evil.
