Ignoring popular opinion - does Rethug obstructionism parallel Vietnam? |
|
Poll after national poll puts American's support for benchmarks and dates for troop withdrawal in the 62-67% range. I understood many rethugs marching in lock step to Shrub's insanity for the first couple of years in Iraq, but now as we begin year 5 of this quagmire - WTF are so many of them still doing supporting a policy opposed by 2/3 of the American people? Is this not political suicide?
I'm not a historian, but is there anybody out there in the know that can draw a parallel to Vietnam? What was the Vietnam's war unpopular ratings polling at and for how long before we started air lifting troops out? I seek an example from our last big unpopular war to put into context the way of obstructionism from the BushCo regime.
How long can they remain in power NOT representing the will of We The People? Maybe history from the Vietnam era can offer a clue?

point where Americans started to strongly disapprove was 1968, the year of the Tet Offensive. Nixon supposedly ran on a platform of having a "secret way" to end the war, so obviously the war was a big part of the election, just as now. It still took 6 more years to end it, though, when Nixon and Kissinger knew it was pointless and "secretly" allowed North Vietnam to start winning against SV, and then the Dems cut off funds and got blamed. That's my read on history, anyway--y'all are free to dispute that version.

It has been said that the Bush administration exceeds the Nixon admin in secrecy. Up till now, Nixon set the bar for an isolated government.
Somehow the people reached the politicians during the Vietnam war and drove the powers that be to end it??? I seek to learn from the anti-war movement of the 60's because they WERE the change that ended the war. Appreciate your spin on it wienerdoggie :)
