When you see someone texting and driving...
does that mean YOU are not paying attention to the road either? It would take a lot of attention to determine what someone is doing with their phone as far as talking vs. texting vs. dialing. Just playing devil's advocate!

2. No, especially when they're coming AT you down a one way street.
Yes, it happened to me for real. Let's just say that a car coming at YA head on with the driver having a cell phone in their hand is what we would call in the Intel Field "a key indicator." :P

4. Nope...
A good defensive driver keeps his/her eyes moving... it doesn't take but a split second to realize when someone is texting. I see it every day. I wouldn't doubt that "check the driver's communication devices" appears on the "To Do FIRST When Arriving on the Scene of an Accident" list of highway patrol officers coast to coast.

6. Doesn't it make you want to text them right back to stop it?
;-)

I see lots of drivers not paying attention, but I don't examine them because I am too often taking evasive action.

7. No
I take in everything within my field of vision, and it only takes a few milliseconds to ascertain that some nimrod is texting while driving. It prompts me to give the nimrod's vehicle a wider berth.

8. I can't tell you how many times I've come up on a big SUV moving about
10mph below traffic speed, only to see the driver with the cell phone as I pass.

Of course, said SUV usually blows my doors in 10 minutes later when the driver has finished the call and decided to make up for lost time!

9. Somebody yelled at ya for texting on the road did they?
Sorry, seeing that someone is texting and actually texting are not comparable distractions.

Less an examination and more a simple glance.

Staying somewhat aware of other drivers is part and parcel I believe of good defensive driving.

And, as most people who text while driving hold the phone with the wrist resting on the steering wheel and above the window line, it's really not that tough to discern what they're doing.

It's not too difficult to tell when someone is shaving, applying lipstick, yelling/singing or reaching down to the floorboard either.

16. If you don't think it's obvious when someone is texting, then you aren't paying attention.
They're looking at the center of the steering wheel or wherever else
their mobile is located, both hands are in use, and yes, they're
probably falling back from the car ahead of them because they
know they can't react fast enough if the car in front hits the brakes.

17. There is no need to "examine"
All it takes is a glance. I glance around all of the time when I am driving and have yet to have an accident. Honestly, people who text and drive are idiots. Complete and total idiots. In my opinion that type of behavior is just one level below drinking and driving. Again, no need to examine. As many people have stated you usually notice them when they veer off in your lane.

10. I was trying to merge behind a guy on a motorcycle and he was fiddling with his phone
as we were getting on the freeway. I won't even do that in my car.

11. when I pass them as they go about 10 MPH, it's not that hard to tell what they are doing
and a night, it very easy to see the lighted gizmo in front of their faces.

F U if you text and drive!

13. When I drive my 18 wheeler I see everything. It's always good to know
where and what the vehicles are doing around you. Hell I'm always looking for an escape route to keep from running over the idiots!

14. Failed premise
The level of distraction of a texting driver isn't lessened by the distractions of those around him or her.

18. No, it means that I am watching what all the drivers around me are
doing, especially when I'm on my motorcycle. If I can see their faces in their mirror, or see their faces as I look into the windows, it is more likely that they can see me as well.

If I can see their faces, and their faces are looking toward something else - I get ready for them to try to squash me.

How is your defensive driving? I got my first motorcycle in 1961, and am accident free - so far. But tomorrow is a new day.
