Poll question: Grade your member of Congress (House)
About a year ago, I asked how people felt about their congressman/congresswoman. Now that healthcare reform has passed, how do you feel about them. If they're not retiring, will you vote for them in November.

I personally think my Congressman is awesome....he was one of the authors of HR 3200 and has been fighting every step of the way for healthcare reform. My next step is to get him to cosponsor HR 4789. As for November, I already have a campaign sign in my window. I will admit that in 2008 when I voted for him I didn't know much about him but voted straight ticket (I was fairly new to the area then). Now the more I learn about him the more I like him..... and he reads my blog.

Would've been an F, but he voted for the jobs bill. So I'll give him that.

He's an arrogant SOB and my mission is to get him out in 2012. He can't be primaried because Illinois sturpidly had their primary on Feb. 2nd. So we in the 3rd Congressional District of Illinois are stuck with this buffoon for two more years. As you can tell, I despise him and everything he stands for. :puke: :puke: :puke:

81. Yes, I met him once before...
...in Monrovia. I voted for him in '08, if I'm still here, I'd be voting for him again, but it looks like I am going to be moving out of the 26th in a few months (which I just found out about). Hate to leave this area (Sierra Madre), but after 16 years, I've outgrown the house I'm in, the owner wants it back, and it's time to move on.

One thing I'll say about closet-case Dreier, he apparently brings the pork home to this majority "conservative" district, so they keep bringing him back for more, unfortunately. I hope Russ fares better (or, better yet, WINS) next time around.

Edited on Mon Mar-29-10 09:25 PM by Kaleva
I gave him an "A" grade overall. I don't always agree with what he does but I truly believe he's the best Dem this district will ever elect to Congress.

Stupak voted against NAFTA

http://clerk.house.gov/evs/1993/roll575.xml

He voted against the IWR

http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2002/roll455.xml

He voted in favor of a resolution disapproving of Bush increasing troop strength in Iraq (the surge)

http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2007/roll099.xml

Stupak voted in favor of Kucinich's bill to remove troops from Afghanistan

http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2010/roll098.xml

Stupak is a co-sponser of HR 874 "Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act"

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-874

Stupack was endorsed by the following unions in 2008:

International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 324
Michigan State AFL-CIO
Michigan Teamsters Joint Council No. 43
National Association of Social Workers
National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU)
Service Employees International Union (SEIU)
United Auto Workers (UAW)

http://www.stupakforcongress.com/release_details.asp?id=22

Representative Stupak supported the interests of the AFL-CIO - Lifetime 98 percent during his legislative career up until 2008.

http://www.votesmart.org/issue_rating_category.php?can_id=26912

Bart Stupak has voted with a majority of his Democratic colleagues 95.6% of the time during the current Congress.

http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/members/s001045/

In this youtube video of a Stupak town meeting held October 9, 2009 in Cheboygan, Michigan, Stupak says he'll vote for the HCR bill even if his amendment is defeated.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URr68joWr1E&feature=player_embedded

YouTube video of Stupak's speech the night of the House vote.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5szuqPxaTs

Stupak supports universal health care:

“It’s caused a lot of internal conflict. ‘Am I doing the right thing,’ you know?” he told The Hill days before the health care vote Sunday. “I believe everyone should have health care. In all my correspondence — I’ve been saying for years — it’s a right, not a privilege.”

"....He never signed up for federal health benefits, keeping a 1992 campaign promise that he would wait until universal health care was the law of the land. "

http://blog.mlive.com/capitolchronicles/2010/03/bart_stupak_the_moderate_from.html

Stupak calls out pro-life groups for what they are:

"Maybe these so-called groups for life are not really standing up for the sanctity of life," Stupak said. "Maybe they're there for political purposes. Maybe they've lost their mission."

"Yes," he admitted. "I find it amazing that when President Bush issued the executive order on embryonic stem cell research -- which I agreed with -- all these pro-life groups such as National Right to Life applauded it. And now President Obama issues one and suddenly it's not worth the paper it's written on."

"What does that teach us?" I asked.

"It's hypocrisy," he said.

http://www.freep.com/article/20100328/COL01/3280475/1001/rss01

"This district is pro-life, pro-gun and pro-working families," he(David Haynes, a political science professor at Northern Michigan University) said. "Democrats know that they would be at great risk if Bart wasn't on the ticket because then Republicans would have a good shot here."

http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/03/24/stupak.criticism/index.html

“He (Stupak) has an impeccable reputation with most Democrats in his district,” said David Wasserman of the Cook Political Report.
