Billionaire Meg Whitman running out of campaign cash!
Seriesly!

http://www.mercurynews.com/bay-area-news/ci_14781510

If Meg Whitman's gubernatorial campaign keeps burning greenbacks at the rate it has since the first of the year, her war chest will be empty shortly after noon on Thursday, the first of April....

So the political speculation on Monday centered on when the billionaire would write her next big check and just how huge it will be.

Whitman has already donated $39 million to her campaign — a California political record for self-funding. But a radio and TV ad campaign that picked up steam in February led to her spending $27.2 million in the first 11 weeks of the year — an average of $358,439 a day....

So far, the campaign's been mum as to when the former eBay CEO will make another deposit. But it was obvious Monday that the depleted coffers would have no effect on Whitman's carpet-bombing of California's airwaves.

An associate out here suggested she could do more good by simply agreeing to spend all those Meg-abuck$ on social services if we agree to let her be governor. :eyes:

1. It's obscene how much it costs to run a campaign these days
But I'm all for rich Republicans bankrolling themselves for office.

2. Just one person's take here but I just don't like this woman Meg Whitman.
I don't like her politics.

I hope Jerry Brown sweeps the state to be its once and future governor.

3. Well she's not running out as such
She's still got more money than she knows what to do with, she's just spending it faster than she anticipated. Not that I object to her throwing away her own money...I don't think the perception that she's trying to buy the election will do her much good.

4. A billionaire who doesn't know the value of a dollar
Either that, or she's kind of a delegator. I wonder if she's watching her expenditures all that closely? Or who will walk the plank after she's spent all that money and found out that the voters still don't love her?

5. Her horribly produced ads run here in LA every 30 seconds. That's got to be expensive.

8. Same frickin' ads, all day long, all night long, all weekend, day after day,
week after week, month after month, for what seems like the better part of a year ALREADY.

In a state with 25% medically uninsured and probably 20% REAL unemployment. Don't think people won't notice and feel a bit peeved at her rich-person's ways.

13. Interesting. Relatively few up here in the Bay Area.
Isn't this her home base? I mean, I'm typing this from right across the street from eBay, for Dog's sake!

15. Bay Area Spared...
You are very lucky then because down here it's like all the time man. I happen to be home a lot these days and these ads are everywhere... Getting my nails down the other day and of course the TeeVee has some soap on and BOOM, there she goes again, like three or four ads in like a half an hour. The important point here is that, in IMHO, 90% of her ads that I have seen are attack ads against this Steve Pozner guy, who I am sure is also scum but he then becomes sort of the victim (not to me of course) when you hear the BS old Meg's ads are screaming.

Let them show us what asshole's they all are in the primary and then: LETS GO JERRY IN NOVEMBER!!!!

16. Poizner is indeed scum
but in a completely different way.

Ironically, he tried to buy his way into the Assembly (legislature) a few years ago (and lost). Running in a liberal district, he tried to cast himself as a moderate repuke.

And now that he no longer has the money advantage, running against Meg-abuck$? He figures his only chance is to run far right and try to grab the red-meat, anti-immigrant conservatives. :eyes:

17. They already know who she is.
Tawdry ads aren't likely to change that.

7. People are gonna notice how she seems to think she can just BUY herself
the governorship. I don't think it's gonna prove very helpful when so many folks in the state are on the brink of losing everything.

And by being such a spendthrift, she is giving Jerry Brown a HUGE pile of ammunition against her.

14. Good. Brown has been doing this wisely.
He's keeping a low profile and letting Whitman and Poizner pummel one another. Whoever wins will be out of cash after the primary. Smart move on Brown's part. After all, he needs less air time to begin with, due to name recognition.
