Carly Fiorina: Breadless Holiday Of Passover Is A Time To 'Break Bread'

California Senate candidate Carly Fiorina (R) sent a letter to her supporters yesterday in honor of the first night of the Jewish holiday of Passover, which she described as a time where "we break bread and spend time with our families and friends."

Add this to the annals of unfortunate metaphors, since Passover is actually a time when most Jews abstain from eating any bread at all.

Passover marks the Jewish exodus from slavery in Egypt, when they were so rushed to escape they didn't even have time to let their bread rise. Instead, they ate Matzoh, or unleavened bread. Typically, Jews replace all bread and bread products with Matzoh for the eight days of the Passover holiday.

Again Fiorina demonstrates her cultural sensitivity...

12. Um, actually, matzoh is unleavened bread--as the article says.
I don't get the joke.

Besides, Jesus was celebrating Passover when he held the Last Supper, and the substance he was breaking and giving to the disciples is commonly described "bread," even though it was obviously unleavened--i.e., matzoh.

Communion wafers are also unleavened, and what is consumed at Communion is known colloquially as "bread and wine."

When Christians speak of "breaking bread together," they are not just referring to eating a meal with a loaf of bread in it, but often to Communion, where they are eating unleavened bread.

So really, this is picking at nits, people. Sorry to poop the party, but don't worry--there are plenty more and better reasons to ridicule Carly Fiorina than this one.

(Ask yourself...if, say, Rachel Maddow, or Barack Obama, said this, would you be hooting at their ignorance of Jewish custom, or would you be saying "Nothing wrong with that--matzoh is unleavened BREAD!")

14. I'd suspect those two would understand that levening agents are
forbidden during passover.

Or at least be smart enough to check the Wikipedia page first.

22. I still don't get what you mean.
Are you saying that "unleavened bread" is a misnomer? Are you saying that it's not bread unless it includes a leavening agent?

Then I guess a lot of people are crazy for calling it "unleavened bread" and for referring to Communion wafers as "bread" too. Oh well. A lot of people certainly do.

But I forgot...if Wikipedia says it, it MUST be so...

This one is directed exactly at your point: http://www.hebrew4christians.net/Holidays/Spring_Holidays/Pesach/Chametz/chametz.html

I think the point of the OP is the predictable tone deafness of Fiorina. It's no wonder that someone with that lack of attention to detail ran HP nearly into the ground.

21. How Christians and Jews describe Passover may possibly be different.
But continue telling Jews how we eat bread on Passover. I'm sure people will be very understanding of your explanation.

I doubt they will shun you.

Being technically right is sometimes to be stunningly foolish.

23. Nobody is saying Jews eat risen bread.
I am not saying Jews eat risen bread. Carly Fiorina is not saying Jews eat risen bread. Sheesh. You act as if I am insulting the Jews just because even the article above refers to matzoh as "unleavened bread."

Also, please try to remember you're dealing with a person here...not just some amorphous non-Jewish person who, of course, can't POSSIBLY know ANYTHING about Passover, because the ONLY way to know ANYTHING about Passover is to be Jewish. :sarcasm:

26. I'd have to agree.
"When Pharaoh freed the Hebrews, it is said that they left in such a hurry that they could not wait for bread to rise. In commemoration, no leavened bread is eaten, for which reason it is called "The Festival of the Unleavened Bread".<3> Matza (flat unleavened bread) is the primary symbol of the holiday."

30. Gee, I dunno ...
If she came to someone's house to break bread would she bring that funky demon sheep from her commercials? I haven't seen it lately, but that's OK. I haven't seen any roaches lately either and I haven't missed either the sheep or the roaches. It has been good.
