Mom of teen charged with bullying South Hadley H.S. student Phoebe Prince into suicide blames victim
The mother of one of the "Mean Girls" charged with bullying 15-year-old Phoebe Prince to death defended her daughter Tuesday, saying she never lifted a hand against the tormented girl but just "called her names."

Angeles Chanon admitted that her daughter, Sharon Chanon Velazquez, 16, had once been suspended from school for verbally abusing Phoebe - but blamed the bullied girl for starting it.

"(Sharon) exchanged a couple of words with her," Chanon told the Boston Herald. "Phoebe was calling her names. They're teenagers. They call names."

Chanon insisted her daughter never "physically assaulted" Phoebe, no matter what the District Attorney says.

"I know she knows better than that. I wouldn't accept that," she said.

6. Typical
I've experienced the same thing, on a much smaller scale, with my neighbor. His three kids are some of the nastiest pieces o' work this village has ever produced, but when I informed him of what his children had been doing to my yard and my garden, he said, "They wouldn't do that. I told them not to. They know better."

Yeah, that makes your parenting work. Riiiiight. :eyes:

39. but who sets the tone that gives the child the impression that it is ok to do this kind
of thing?
Who is it that is supposed to set the standards, and the example..the internal standards..that will give a child the instinct
to know right from wrong?

41. The parents could be really decent people who have tried to instill
the right values but adolescence is very peer-group driven.

They are tough years for kids (and parents).

43. Not like this
It's never been this bad. There've been paper throwing and taunting, but not and never like this. Back then the teachers dealt with it and when the bully went home, the parents meted out the punishment after the principal did.

Is the violation of civil rights the name calling with regard to the Irish nationality, and the bodily injury the suicide?

18. This is why relying on the parents won't work; the schools have to treat this as a behavior SpEd
Bullying students need to be cut (not culled) from their herd and placed in separate classrooms that treat them as behavior SpEds, which they are. Parents either can't help (for a variety of reasons, from time to will to skill) or won't (lack of follow through; "not MY angel!"). Special classes cost money but less than prosecuting bullying as a crime.

What the kids are doing, ultimately, is acting out the issues of the parents.

42. I used to work in a school for troubled kids
and despite brushes with the law, despite an in-your-face hatred for authority and constant disruptions in class, there were parents that would INSIST the teacher, security, the vice principal and every witness to events was either lying or wrong. Their kid would not do what everyone had seen him/her do. It happened time and again.

Oh, and I might add, many of those parents went to the same school when they were young.

47. Remind the Mother
That her daughter tormented an innocent girl on a daily basis and fucked up the lives of her parents permanently. Phoebe will never have another day on this earth, which isn't such a bad things since Phoebe is in heaven now. But her parents are in a living Hell. They'll never see Phoebe get married, have kids, they'll never have grandchildren. Fuck you and your savage animal of a daughter.

46. Out of All OF This
These bullies will spend their lives in the spotlight because of this. Companies will be leery about hiring them, decent society will shun them, men and women they meet won't want anything to do with them, and then when they face God, He'll likely send them to Hell.

I know lots of people on here are atheists, but frankly I believe that a huge part of justice is that they'll face an eternity of suffering as a result of this. God doesn't want bullies in Heaven or it wouldn't be heaven now would it?
