More tritium found at Vt. Yankee, NRC plans closed-door meeting

Vernon, Vermont - March 30, 2010

More tritium has been found on the grounds of the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant in Vernon.

On Monday, the Department of Health said that another well, deeper than the other monitoring wells, is showing increased levels of tritium contamination. The well is outside the area officials marked as being contaminated, so it's located in an area they thought was clear. The tritium levels are low but more tests will be conducted. Just last week, plant owner Entergy said it had found the source of the tritium leak and plugged it.

Next month the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a closed-door meeting to discuss the leak with officials from Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The April 14 meeting will be held in Keene, N.H. Officials say the choice of location has to do with Vermont's Right-to-Know Law, which requires that any meeting involving the majority of any elected board be open to the public.

NRC officials say they wanted to discuss the situation without the scrutiny of the press or the public. However, an open house is tentatively scheduled earlier in the week in Brattleboro. That meeting will be open to the public and the media.
