Weird: Clone of DU's Front Page Found on a British Government National Health Service (NHS) Website
Edited on Wed Mar-31-10 01:49 AM by Turborama
I just stumbled across this when I put a thread title into Google and can't work out how or why they have it there: http://www.geneticseducation.nhs.uk/cgi-bin/parser.pl?bset=0005&bpth=/democraticunderground.com

(I'm not sure if "clone" is the right word but it seems to fit)

Here's their homepage: http://www.geneticseducation.nhs.uk/

Anyone got any ideas about what this is?

ETA: I've taken a screenshot and will add it if anyone can't access the link.

1. Nothing sinister.
You can change the address at the end of the link and the same function is performed:
http://www.geneticseducation.nhs.uk/cgi-bin/parser.pl?bset=0005&bpth=/lagom.nl/lcd-test/

3.  Thanks, I still don't get why it's there in the 1st place

Could the link to DU's homepage be saved as a favorite in their intranet, or something?

Question and thanks go out to you and gcomeau.

4. It's to make webpages easier for blind/partially sighted people.

The system is called "Betsie" (BBC Education Text to Speech Internet Enhancer), and it strips everything but the text out of a webpage so it can be fed through a text-to-speech program without it tripping over banner ads and the like. It can also override the colours & fonts to make it easier to read.

If you scroll right to the bottom, you'll see "Betsie settings" that you can tweak: See http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/betsie/ for general info.

As greyl says, you can change the target website to anything you like.
