Notice that there won't be any off-shore drilling anywhere off south Florida |
|
They showed the map of new drilling areas on Cspan this morning. It was almost funny to see that drilling will not take place off south Florida though every other inch of domestic coast is fair game. One wonders who in in charge down there, who the pro-drilling crowd fears.

1. My guess is they don't want to have to deal with any policy involving refugees/rafts. |
|
Do you have have to help them? What if they tie off or atempt to board the rig? Are they considered hostile?
Seems like a can of worms avoided by simply not going there.

2. What gets me is that rightwingers on the Atlantic side have been fighting off shore |

wind farms (at least where my wife's parents live). I bet those same people I've debated on that topic are welcoming this with open arms. I wonder if they'll be worried about their already destroyed property values then.
Isn't a big portion of the area around the keys a refuge?

3. Should get Jeb Bush to speak out about this ... |
|
I mean, it's not very well covered, but Jeb Bush opposed offshore drilling ... one of the few times he publicly disagreed with his odder ... er, older ... brother, THE pRESIDENT ...

4. It's two powerful corporate interests battling and oil losing |
|
The oil lobby vs. the tourism lobby. Since Florida believes they make more on tourism than they are likely to to on oil production (particularly since the profits from oil production are likely to go to other states) there's not much incentive to support the oil lobby.
It's not a case of the people beating the oil lobby, at any rate.
