Boehner criticizes Obama's offshore drilling plan |
|
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2010/03/31/2253655.aspx<snip> Obama's plan drew immediate criticism from both Republicans and environmentalists. House Minority Leader John Boehner issued a press release even before Obama officially made his remarks on the plan, saying the plan does not go far enough. "Keeping the Pacific Coast and Alaska, as well as the most promising resources of the Gulf of Mexico, under lock and key makes no sense at a time when gasoline prices are rising and Americans are asking 'Where are the jobs?'" Boehner said in the statement.

12. How do we know that's not exactly what he wants? |
|
How is it really hurting him to try and appease Republicans? It allows him to serve his corporate donors with a conservative presidency, and gives him a plausible cover from the left's expectations of him.

15. Meanwhile, Republicans learned plenty |
|
Actually, I'm starting to think Republicans got a read on this president way back during the stimulus bill. President Obama's almost pathological need to be bipartisan and seen as the "compromiser bringing people together" meant that he would adopt Republican policy after Republican policy without any assurance they'd give anything in return.
Republicans get the best of both worlds - they have a President willing to do what they wish and they don't have to take any responsibility for it when it goes wrong!
After the stimulus and HCR, that should've been the end of this nonsense. And yet . . .
So, once again, Republicans get what they want, and they get to simultaneously claim it isn't what they want at all.
Unlike the President, they seem to know how to negotiate. They start with their most hard-line position and stick with it until the very end, extracting as many concessions as humanly possible from the ruling majority as the most liberal policies are jettisoned to appease them. They don't offer up a middling compromise and then negotiate down from it. They play hard ball.
I like hard ball more than chess, to be honest. Will someone throw away the President's board? I don't think it's chess. More chutes and ladders. "Two steps up, one fall into the pit of hell."
This is a very bad game and the President is an increasingly poor player.
