Wire,' 'Treme' writer David Mills dies

Source: CNN, HBO

David Mills, a writer and producer for some of the best TV shows of the past two decades - including "Homicide," "Picket Fences," "ER" and "The Wire" - has died, CNN has confirmed through HBO.

Mills reportedly died of a brain aneurysm Tuesday in New Orleans, where he was a writer and co-producer of the new HBO series "Treme" (Khandi Alexander, one of the stars, is in the photo above). The show is scheduled for its premiere April 11. (HBO, like CNN, is a unit of Time Warner.)

This is sad. The man co-wrote (with David Simon) what I consider far and away the best show ever on TV "The Wire". He will be missed.

He also co wrote "The Corner" which was another great yet under-appreciated show.

3. Man, "The Wire" was indeed one of the greatest shows to ever air.

It was definitely a "cable-only" show.

No national network (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) would have the balls to air it, uncut and unedited.

I wonder what impact this will have for "Treme"? Will it go beyond it's initial season? If it does, will the writing 'suck' in the second season without him?

His death is a huge loss for the national social conscience. He focused on social issues in great detail, in ways few others could or even dared.

5. Now This Is A Tragic Loss.

A guy with that much talent, accomplishment and future potential. "The Wire" is one of the best things ever put on TV; really looking forward to the new series.
