They let go the contractors a week ago (with three days notice). Today they announced that they would be offering early outs to some folks - those who qualify will be told in the next two weeks. Then the layoffs begin.

The "funny" part is they started the email telling us how our group had driven huge profits for the corp for the last several years... but now they need to 'restructure' to help bring up stock prices.

bastards.

1. That sucks!
Hopefully, it means there's something better waiting for you around the corner. I'll keep a good thought for you.

Hang in there!

9. Oh, Jeez...
Is there anyone you can talk to there? Maybe they won't let you all go at once.

10. we're doing the "turtle"... keeping our heads low and hoping they don't see us...

on edit - I am almost 53, which is not a good age for a woman looking to get hired somewhere new. On top of which - with over 30 years experience I am not an inexpensive employee... Hence I am a target for separation, and will likely have a very hard time finding a new job.
As will my husband.
Those of us in the "gray brigade" are not exactly in demand....

11. Maybe it's time to reinvent yourself...
Was it your dream job or was there something else you wanted to be when you were growing up?

13. I had my dream job for many years, left it to move out to the country
I didn't like merely existing in the suburbs of DC when I could be living on 5 acres in the foothills of the mountains. I told my husband that I could expand from raising hens, veggies and bees to a homestead flock of meat birds and maybe a couple cattle.
It will be interesting, that's for sure. :-)

3. No one expected recession to last this long
This is the longest recession in 70 years. Many firms were in good enough shape to handle a typical recession, but the length of this downturn has been much longer than anyone could have expected.

5. They're hoping employees will quit and find a new job now.
That will save the company regarding unemployment payouts.

6. there are really no jobs around C-ville, I have been looking for almost two years
just to keep our family from being totally tied to one corporation.... but yeah - they are likely hoping folks will quit.

7. The company I work for has been doing mass layoffs to fund dividend payments
It's really painful working for a corporation. I need to figure out an idea of my own so I can escape this crap.
