Thurs. Jan. 19 <1989> • Soviets propose reducing it's nuclear tactical battlefield weapons. This may be a ploy to win approval of German people who are aware their country would be the battlefield for an exchange of such weapons.

Dick Thornburg came in to see me about pardons. He doesn't believe I should pardon Patty Hearst, North, Poindexter or McFarlane. I'm afraid he's right. Nick Brady came by to say goodbye & thank me. Same with Alan Greenspan . Then it was the V.P.'s turn. All of my W.H. staff was gathered in the Roosevelt room for him to thank & say a goodbye.

Tomorrow I stop being President.

Patty Hearst was pardoned by President Jimmy Carter in 1977 or 1978.

Either this was a forgery like Howard Hughtes, or it was just Reagan losing his memory again.

I STAND CORRECTED: PATTY HEARST DID NOT RECEIVE A FULL PARDON UNDER CARTER, JUST COMMUTED HER SENTENCE. CLINTON PARDONED HER.

2. I doubt that it is authentic either, however, he was suffering from, at least, early onset...
Alzheimer's, so it is possible that it was him, with memories that were mixed up, stuff like that.

5. Um, that was a reference
to Reagan's dismissing the Iran-Contra conspiracy by saying that "mistakes were made."

Other politicians have used that absurd excuse since then, but I think he was the first.
