Olbermann's Ratings Up! Big Time!
April #'s: "Steady Upward Climb" For MSNBC
MSNBC is raving about its "steady upward climb" in the ratings. In April, Countdown with Keith Olbermann was up the most, and all the primetime shows posted gains. Here's the release. Recapping:

6pm: Tucker: up 9 percent in the demo (118,000 vs. 108,000) and up 11 percent in total viewers (315,000 vs. 284,000)

7pm: Hardball: up 33 percent in the demo (204,000 vs. 153,000) and up 31 percent in total viewers (572,000 vs. 436,000)

8pm: Countdown: up 73 percent in the demo (292,000 vs. 169,000) and up 81 percent in total viewers (818,000 vs. 452,000)

9pm: Scarborough: up 58 percent in the demo (218,000 vs. 138,000) and up 41 percent in total viewers (538,000 vs. 382,000)

10pm to midnight: Doc Block: up 63 percent in the demo (186,000 vs. 114,000) and up 41 percent in total viewers (391,000 vs. 278,000)

1. Maybe now they'll figure out that there's money to be made with
left leaning news/entertainment. Stephanie Miller is looking good to be the Imus replacement. Her shtick is much like Imus; bombastic, irreverent, highly entertaining and politically timely. Wouldn't that be sweet?

Or Tweety for that matter? They are up simply because of KO...Plain and simple. Tucker is still absolute slime...

67. I doubt it. They'll look at the numbers and see that Tucker, Matthews, ...
... and Scarborough have all increased viewership, alongside Olbermann -- that's 3-to-1 -- so Olbermann is benefitting from being in the middle of all that Right-of-Center opinion.

Solution to maximize viewers: Replace Olbermann with Lionel.

:)

Wow. Olbermann has jumped 366,000 viewers, more than double the increase for the other hosts, and he's more than 200,000 viewers ahead of his counterparts, as well. Matthews and Scarborough are dragging Olbermann down. I hope his agent is pushing MSNBC to replace Matthews/Scarborough with more compatible programming.

I'm sick and tired of the Keith Estrogen Brigade. I mean yeah, I don't begrudge the ladies their eye candy but I'm only watching him for the commentary. That Allison stand-in is very easy on the eyes but is sorely lacking in gravitas, she comes across too much like the chatty femshells on Extra. Where are us guys to go for someone we can treat as an intellectual icon and a sex symbol? The women and gay guys already have Stewart and Colbert!

Stephanie Miller I have not heard yet but she looks like she might be one of the lady libs that's the full package, easy on the eyes and bringing some brains to the table. Does she yet have a Testosterone Brigade?

the DU rules that require you to go to and read the Countdown/Keith Olbermann Group. It is voluntary. If you don't like it or the EDVs don't go there. There have been plenty of GD threads for Countdown. BTW those ladies (and the men that love them)have been writing to MSNBC in support of Keith for years now. They may not be the reason that KO got a new contract but they damn sure helped.

BTW Keith is more than his commentaries and shines light into a lot of dark places every night while pointing out the obvious. If you only watch for the commentaries then you are missing a lot.

You will have to ask Botany about Stephanie's group for the estrogen challenged.O8)

Edited to add-just saw your other post. Yeah the sarcasm smiley would of helped.:hi: And it isn't even primary season yet.

So hard to tell if I'm just too subtle for the room or just not delivering the goods.

I'm a big fan of Keith. I'd totally dismissed him at first since he appeared to be a pundit on a cable news channel and, frankly, none of them are any good. Saw mention of him on DU, gave him a chance, came to realize he's not really a pundit. Tweety, DeadInternborough, Manvoice Crosby, Nancy Spermsample Grace, those are pundits, Keith is a journalist. I'm impressed with how he can blend serious coverage and humor without detracting from either. I also like how he handles his advocacy journalism. While for the most part I would prefer journalists to remain impartial and stick with the facts, these days being "impartial" basically means being complicit in the lie. When an accusation that someone lied comes up and that person says "no I didn't," impartial reporting is not just repeating both sides and leaving it at that! Impartial reporting is "These people said he lied, he says he didn't, here's the evidence that proves he lied. This is not a matter of opinion, this is a matter of fact." That's impartial journalism. Advocate journalism includes all that plus calling the guy an asshole as well as a liar. Keith does it beautifully. You know where he stands on issues, he doesn't muck about with the truth to support his point of view, and he doesn't pull punches.

I think the only criticism of Keith I can come up with are his pundit guests. Craig Crawford is the only one I really enjoy. The rest of them I think are too close to the game. In a murder trial the prosecution is going to try to prove someone guilty, the defense is going to try and prove him innocent, and the pundits just treat it like it's a sporting event. No. In sports the only issue at stake is how well you play the game. In a trial, we're trying to arrive at something resembling the truth. I know we can't convict someone on "I think he did it," we have to get solid evidence -- I wouldn't want to put even someone like Bush in jail under a show trial, it has to be done to the letter and observing all the rules -- but there's still the question of whether he did it or not! This isn't some abstract chess match, this is about justice. But the commentators he gets on seem to be dispassionate and disengaged from the entire affair.

All of this crap reminds me of a scene from some show or movie I can't remember the name of where some rich kid got his date killed. I think the situation was he tried to drug her drink and screwed up the dosage and she died or something like that. Now for most parents the reaction would be "You tried to rape a girl and you killed her?!?" with the outrage being that he tried to rape a girl and killed her. The rich dad's reaction was "You tried to rape a girl and kill her?" with the outrage being that he did something to put the family's reputation in jeopardy and how could he be so sloppy. And his first questions were "Where's the body now? Did anybody see you together? Can anyone link you to her tonight? Where else could you have been so we can establish an alabi?" Um, hello? What about the part where a young woman's life was taken away from her because junior couldn't find himself a consenting partner?

19. Scarborough's ratings should be credited to Keith for 2 reasons
1) obvious lead-in help

and

2) over time Scarborough's format has resembled Keith's more and more. Imitation and flattery, and all that.

I do have to give credit to Scarborough for sometimes having 2 left leaning panelists on at the same time that he includes a rightie and himself. What a state of affairs our media are in when a panel that is roughly balanced (as opposed to right leaning) is so unusual that we notice it.

Seriously, how lame is it when your lead story is about the good political humor other people are doing? I mean, it's already lame when a stand-up comic steals someone else's material but when your show consists of clips of other, better shows? It's like that crappy Kangaroo Jack film where the best bit they had to show from that film was the kangaroo doing a Dr. Evil impression. That's the best joke from the entire movie, impressions of a funnier movie?

Meanwhile, Fox News Channel surged to a third-place finish, delivering 1.64 million viewers in prime, thanks in part to its coverage of the Don Imus controversy. Wednesday night’s installment of The O’Reilly Factor was FNC’s most-viewed program of the week, as 3.13 million people tuned in between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Edited on Wed May-02-07 03:24 PM by Fla Dem
right off the bat. We had Time Warner cable, just the basic, no digital and MSNBC was in the lin up. But Comcast took over Time Warner in this area and guess what....NO MSNBC in the basic channel line up...FOX News Yes....CNN.....Yes....MSNBC....no. I had to upgrade, spend more money to get the basic digital service in order to have MSNBC. I have a feeling it's like that in a lot of areas, and many people don't subscribe to digital service.

80. ...WITH an on air apology
Donohue deserves it.

At a time when the media admittedly was complicit with their silence, Donahue was a lone voice of reality - so they sacked him quick.

42. Huge Jump, They Must Be
dancing on the ceilings. Scarborough is benefiting from KO. It must be killing him to know that.

44. If they took Glen Beck off the air the ratings would probably soar even higher.
That guy spews nothing but hate filled lies.

52. That is CNN you are talking about
MSNBC had a brief love affair with the Savage Weiner, but not Beck.

45. But O'Reilly still has all the viewers
in assisted living facilities.
Yep. Bill-O has cornered the market on the demographic least likely to consume. Which definitely gives Keith the edge with advertisers. Keith not only has the more desirable people -- liberal -- he also has the more desirable demographic for marketing, the 18-40 group.
Poor Bill. This ought to ramp up his rage even more.

73. When are the rest of the networks going to figure it out?
The way to fight FOX is not to be FOX. Be the alternative to FOX.

79. One of the main reasons I watch Countdown: Jonathan Turley
Professor of law at The George Washington University Law School and Constitutional scholar. KO makes good use of Turley's expertise to dig into and dissect the unlawful practices of this administration, which should matter to us all. When Turley speaks, I listen.
