Lejeune Marine dies in Africa

The Associated Press
Posted : Wednesday Mar 31, 2010 11:19:05 EDT

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — The Defense Department announced Tuesday that a Marine died in a “non-hostile incident” in Africa.

The government said that 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Randy Heck of Steubenville, Ohio, died Sunday in Djibouti, Africa.

Heck graduated from Harrison Central High School in Cadiz. Family members say he is survived by a daughter, a few weeks old, who he never met.

He was assigned to the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

The Defense Department says the incident is under investigation.

1. Isn't there a chance everyday that a soldier somewhere might die of something?
Combat, accidents, car crashes, food poisoning?

2. Yup, but I still ask myself:
:wtf: are we doing there?

Just FYI, I'm seeing stories of soldiers found dead in their homes and barracks. 12,000 (from memory) military suicide attempts a year sez something's not correct.

4. Where there? You mean Africa?
Soldiers are no more immune from death be it from violence or from accidents or from suicide than anyone anywhere else in the world. Just like police everywhere they are more likely to die from violence because that is part of the nature and the hazard of their jobs.
