Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006 BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The U.S. military is performing DNA tests on a slain militant to determine if he is the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, but U.S. and Iraqi officials said Thursday it did not appear that Abu Ayyub al-Masri had been killed.
Reports that al-Masri, also known as Abu Hamza al-Muhajer, had been killed surfaced after a raid Tuesday that killed four terror suspects in the western Iraqi town of Haditha.
U.S. forces initially "thought there was a possibility al-Masri was among them," Lt. Col. Barry Johnson said. But he said it did not appear the terror chief was killed.

Feb 16, 2007 A spokesman said Friday the U.S. military has no indication that the al-Qaida in Iraq leader was killed or wounded in a raid, while an Iraqi army officer said his deputy has been jailed for a week.
Interior Ministry spokesman, Brig. Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf said earlier Friday that terror leader Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, also known as Abu Ayyub al-Masri, was wounded and an aide killed Thursday in a clash with Iraqi forces near Balad, north of Baghdad.
Khalaf declined to say how Iraqi forces knew al-Masri had been injured, and deputy Interior Minister Maj. Gen. Hussein Ali Kamal later said he could not confirm the information.
But spokesman Lt. Col. Christopher Garver said the U.S. military had no information to corroborate the account.
"We do not believe that he was either killed or wounded last night," Garver said.

May 2, 2007 The leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq was believed killed in a battle between insurgents north of Baghdad, Iraqi security ministers said today, but an al-Qaeda-linked group denied the reports.
The United States ambassador to Iraq and the US military said they could not confirm Abu Ayyub al-Masri had been killed.
Interior Minister Jawad al-Bolani said "primary information" showed Masri was dead, telling a news conference that details would soon be released to the media.
"Some good news was received about the killing of Abu Ayyub al-Masri ... The reliability of this information is high," Bolani said alongside Defence Minister General Abdel Qader Jassim, who also said Masri was believed killed.
