From a mother who lost a son in Iraq

To the editor:

Ruben Navarrette’s recent column on Pat Tillman and Jessica Lynch sure brought life crashing towards me. As the mother of the last man to die after the Jan. 20, 2007, Karbala, Iraq, attack, I can say that having a son die in Iraq is not the kind of sacrifice that brings warmth to the heart. It does not inspire the soul. But it does capture the imagination. I imagine the horror he went through being kidnapped, transported around Iraq for an hour and a half, then executed.

That raid was well planned. The local Karbala army and police knew the attack was coming and did nothing to help our soldiers. The vendors that normally work the area did not come to work that day. The construction workers that usually work long daily hours did not come to work. During the raid, the governor of Karbala Province was heard on the radio demanding that no one react to the attack without his direct order. The head of the Karbala police would not allow American soldiers into his office during the attack, although it had one of the best views of the area. Another high-ranking Karbala police officer was heard talking and laughing on his cell phone after the attack. He was describing the attack as if he witnessed it.

Death on the battle fields of Iraq does not compare to World War II. The sacrifices being made by American families are not in the proud tradition of generations fighting for their country. Not until all Americans realize the horror of Iraq, realize that the situation is not going to improve, and bring all combat troops home, will there be peace for my family. Not until, then can the American military be rebuilt to fight the true war on terror.

6. Just don't know what to say
Bush can't bring them home. Not enough of them have died as not to hurt his unemployment numbers.

10. This statement, "Death on the battle fields of Iraq
does not compare to World War II. The Sacrifices being made by American families are not in the proud tradition of generations fighting for their country." We know this to be true. Bring them Home. Now!!!

12. If Bush and Laura only knew the REAL feeling that comes over a parent
IF Bush and Laura only knew the REAL feeling that comes over a parent with a child in Iraq - let alone one who has lost a loved one there, he would end the War NOW. Two of my sons served in Iraq 1 and 2 and I held my breath so to speak until they both came home.

My oldest son went in 2004 and is a Navy Seabee. He went there to build schools and police stations but they weren't able to do it because the "insurgents" stole most of the supplies off the trucks that were bringing them in from Kuwait. He also saw a group of men there from Halliburton and they told him he should go home and come back over under one of the contractors so they could make the BIG money with no taxes taken out. He is still serving but is home now and is suppose to be called up in a few months but we don't know where he will have to go this time. God bless you and all the parents, husband, and wives, friends, and loved ones of those in Afghanistan and Iraq!:grouphug:

13. 1776Forever, welcome to DU!
Positive thoughts for your son and family; I cannot even imagine the hell families go through when their loved ones are over there. Then I see Cindy Sheehan, and read letters like this, and realize what forever hell the families live every day.
This senseless war needs to be over, for Americans, Iraqis and Afghanis.

14. but....but... Bush says what HE hears from the families is always
"please keep up the mission so we know our loved one didn't die in vain!"

He seriously said that today, this is what he HEARS. People can say a lot of other things but that's what he HEARS.
