We got a fax today from a camera co. saying that if anyone's camera had been destroyed this company would give them one; rent free. Now I know why. Thugs. Typical LAPD.

39. The racist comments on the ABC website is amazing.
Such hatred from people amazes me. These LAPD cops were more than over the line, they were criminal. I'm sick of the LAPD getting away with this sort of thing. They had better watch out or Los Angeles will have another riot like April 29, 1992. Hitting women and children and reporters...how manly and macho they are. LAPD is worthless and shameful and I hope these girly boys get their just karma.

Those cameramen can do much more damage to the police by doing what they did: Capture the brutaility for the whole world to see the erosion of American Freedom.

In any event, assault on a police officer carries a pretty stiff sentence.

That's the LAPD, continuing their long tradition of bigotry and brutality.

It's been going on for decades, the culture of racism deliberately cultivated. Who else remembers stories of the Oakland PD recruiting new officers from the Deep South. Don't think it was just Oakland.

"Protect and serve" my ass - they were beating women and children and a TV cameraman! Wouldn't want their lovely little police riot to get any TV coverage - it might make the minorities uppity...

It's thugs like that which is why I own firearms. At least I might have the satisfaction of taking one or two of them with me.

40. I remember the cops recuriting those good ole boy rednecks.
Not personally, but read about it. There's a book out from the early 1990s, "To Protect and Serve" which is the story of the LAPD. Nothing has changed in their mentality since the start of the LAPD. Too bad the riots of 1992 didn't burn down police stations across the city instead of store keepers.

9 out of 10 times when I hear someone saying there's a video of police over reacting at protests I find it inconclusive or overdramatized on the part of the person posting the video.

Not this time. This was an absolute disgrace and 100% uncalled for. Total complete bullshit. God bless all those that suffered yesterday.

24. OK, so what happened to the "baby steps?"
As I recall correctly, anti-abortion protesters adopted the strategy of taking "baby steps" when arrested by police for blocking clinics. They would take small steps when escorted by officers to police cars. I remember seeing this on news programs. Now (correct me if I'm wrong) I was under the assumption that this maneuver was used to stall arrests and bog down police action since officers could not physically remove someone if they were abiding by the police request to move, albeit at a snail's pace.

So can't this same strategy be used here? Couldn't the demonstrators move very slowly when requested by the police, thereby heeding the demand to move but still making their protest known by doing so in deliberately slow pace? And if they did this, could the police still (legally) harass them?

Nowadays they would be tasered and hog-tied for everyone's "safety". The courts have shown that the police have no duty to protect civilians and lawmakers have made it where a police officer's life and duty is more valuable and important than us lowly serfs.

32. I am so outraged and sickened by what I saw the LAPD do to those people...
I watched it tonight on Countdown w/KO. I was literally shaking and with my jaw dropped as I watched. I felt as if I was watching footage from some 3rd world country that is a police state.

Very disturbing...I saw them hitting women and beating people down to the ground who weren't doing anything.

I suggest everyone write to the Mayor of Los Angeles, Mayor Villaroigosa... I did earlier....His email is:

Dear Mayor,
I just wanted to drop you a note of support.I think the action by your brave police force was long overdue. How many niggers and spics are we going to let live here and steal our jobs and women?
I was watching some footage from some Asian country I think (I can't tell the difference. They all look alike to me) and I was watching their police kick some ass and cracking heads.I thought that this is what America needs right now!The liberals have turned this country into one big gay agenda and I'm sick of it.Next time have your police beat the shit out of some of them too.
Thank you for making me proud to be an American.

Sincerely,
Fred T. Poot

The scary thing, is that there are probably people who actually think that way and feel that way and would want to seriously congratulate the LAPD on their successful transition to being a brutal police state.

44. I remember something Randi Rhodes said about stormtrooper tactics.
Just to paraphrase, remember Waco? Remember Ruby Ridge? The people killed in those places were not angels - in fact, they were total psychos. David Koresh was a child molesting cult leader with the psychological stability of Charles Manson, surrounded by Kool-Aid-drinking pod people. Randy Weaver was a fundamentalist white separatist brandishing illegal weapons and having visions of the Apocalypse. These guys were complete nutballs. And what happened in each case when the government came in with overwhelming force, wearing hats and bats, and looking like Imperial Stormtroopers?

A whole lot of people started rooting for Randy Weaver, and for the Branch Davidians. Even though they were total freaks, they were made out to be the good guys when the government used stormtrooper tactics, tanks and SWAT teams.

That's why it behooves our government to make sure the cops do not behave like Imperial Stormtroopers. People hate stormtroopers.

57. But Randi loves the police state, she advocates it every chance she gets.
That is, as long as the police state is enforcing ideas she agrees with. This is the problem with advocating fascism, reich-wing or leftist, it cuts both ways.

68. There's dozens of ways those rubber bullets can kill or permanently maim you.
They can cause concussions, break ribs, rupture major organs like your heart, kidney or liver, cause internal bleeding, take out your eye, take out your testicles, even shatter your skull.

They're also only non-lethal if used according to the instruction manual - they're supposed to be fired at the ground, and strike their targets after a ricochet. Of course, cops will forget that, and pop you square in the chest with one at point-blank range if you piss them off.

64. 2000 Dem Convention: LAPD attacks Rage Against The Machine concert
Edited on Thu May-03-07 01:14 PM by G_j
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_Democratic_National_Convention_protest_activity#Rage_Against_The_Machine_concert

Rage Against The Machine concert
(many links at webpage)
<snip>
Although they were at first required by the City of Los Angeles to perform in a small venue at a considerable distance, early in August a United States district court judge ruled that the City's request was too restrictive and the City subsequently allowed the protests and concert to be held at a site across from the DNC.<1> The police response was to increase security measures, which included a 12" fence and patrolling by a minimum of 2,000 officers wearing riot gear, as well as additional horses, motorcycles, squad cars and police helicopters.<2> A police spokesperson said they were "gravely concerned because of security reasons".<2>

During the concert, de la Rocha said to the crowd, "brothers and sisters, our democracy has been hijacked,"<1> and later also shouted "we have a right to oppose these motherfuckers!"<3> After the performance, a small group of attendees congregated at the point in the protest area closest to the DNC, facing the police officers.<3> Reports of what activity they engaged in vary, the most extreme being reports of throwing glass, concrete and water bottles filled with "noxious agents,"<4> spraying ammonia on police and slingshotting rocks and steel balls.<5> However, milder reports also arose, one only mentioning "tossing rocks."<6> The police soon after declared the gathering an unlawful assembly,<3> shut off the electrical supply, interrupting performing band Ozomatli,<6> and informed the protestors that they had 20 minutes to disperse on pain of arrest.<7> Some of the protesters remained, however, including two young men who climbed the fence and waved black flags, who were subsequently shot in the face with pepper spray.<5> Police then forcibly dispersed the crowd, using tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets.<5> At least six people were arrested in the incident.<7>

The police faced severe and broad criticism for their reaction, with an American Civil Liberties Union spokesperson saying that it was "nothing less than an orchestrated police riot."<8> Several primary witnesses reported unnecessarily violent actions and police abuses, including firing on reporters,<6> lawyers and people obeying police commands.<7> Protesters were trapped between police fronts, and some were beaten by police while trying to obey commands. At one point, four young men were repeatedly beaten by mounted police while trapped against a wall. Police responded that their response was "outstanding" and "clearly disciplined."<7>

Footage of the protest and ensuing violence, along with an MTV News report on the incident, was included in the Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium DVD.

66. I'm glad this is getting media coverage
Even though I suspect the only reason is because reporters were roughed up as well.

67. Charming. You exercise your constitutional right to democracy and freedom of speech...
...and this is what you get -- a beating by scum who stain the name of cops everywhere. What's it going to take? Another Rodney King?

This is why I'm a great believer in harshly punishing police brutality. A cop's job is to protect and serve, and we grant them the power to do that with the expectation that they won't misuse it. Abuse of that power, as seen in this video, is a truly vile crime, and needs to be punished with a minimum of 15-20 years.

We need to completely purge the LAPD. Mass firings and prosecutions.
