Feisty Ahmadinejad mocks U.S., vows to strengthen Iran nuclear program
Source: Haaretz

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Saturday that imposing further sanctions on his country would not deter Tehran from its nuclear program - vowing that such a move would strengthen it.

In an address, Ahmadinejad attacked United States President Barack Obama for not having changed what he called America's policy of hostility toward his country.

"They say they have extended a hand to Iran, but the Iranian government and nation declined to welcome that," he said. "What kind of hand did you extend toward the Iranian nation? What has changed? Did you lift sanctions? Did you stop propaganda? Did you reduce the pressure?" Ahmadinejad also said that U.S. steps to pressure Iran have backfired and instead have isolated Washington in the eyes of the world.

1. Ahmadinejad talks just like the pubs do.
He has taken every point and spun it backwards. I'd say he's worried.

2. With the American war machine itching for a fight, why should he be worried?
We are the most peaceful nation on the planet and our dear leader won the Peace Prize. We are doing everything in our power to ease tensions, including keeping that campaign promise to speak with our enemies. Why should anyone be worried.

4. Which is the rightwing talking point? Who is "us"?

5. Well I'm no chickenhawk, so let that rest.
put down of the USA, the peaceful bit...........we try, don't have much cooperation.
put down of the President, and the Peace Prize.........yes he did, and the wingers call him dear leader etc
put down of the USA and the President............they have talked, the wingers want war with Iran. Do you?

I post with wingers everyday and I know their language. It's in circles, it's never accurate and it's subversive to the point of always having an underlying dig.

Us is we the people....you're one of us. Not all of us are as cynical, some of us think Iran is ran by nuts who's main job is to fan the flames. Not yelling fire makes them crazy.

6. On several points I disagree
USA - Seems only one country has used nuclear weapons in war. Seems we are the country over-running a good portion of the Middle East. When was the last time Iran started a war? The US has been meddling and toppling leaders in Iran for a long time. Peaceful? You can say that with a straight face? We have empire and when it suits us we have no worries about wholesale slaughter of civilians.

President and the Peace Prize - So that is off limits because a rightwinger brought up the irony. I don't think so. Dear leader, yes, I intended that as a poke at the "supporters at all costs" crowd.

USA and President - You have been spewing your patriotism argument elsewhere. I see this country and President with their faults and consider it part of my responsibility as a citizen to call attention to injustice.

WHAT the hell makes you think I want war with Iran?

You may post with wingers and to be honest, a lot of their foolishness has rubbed off on you, especially wrt your style of for-or-against us type thinking you are always propagating. It makes much more sense now, knowing you spend a lot of time posting with them. Honestly, I can't blame you, it was bound to rub off.

WRT us, actually I don't see a lot of the "supporters at all costs" types really advocating for ordinary Americans of the lower and middle class, more defense of anything from the executive. I know it must make your life easier to brand me cynical. In some ways and sometimes I do lean more cynical. I don't fear your label though.

I draw a line in the sand and stand with average powerless people around the world who we threaten and kill. We have done more saber rattling than honest attempts at diplomacy. Wouldn't be prudent for us to declare peace with Iran at any point, at least until we get a President who really embraces Peace. Iran is not suicidal. If you remember, Sadam had to talk tough too, it was a political obligation. We can't undo the violence we caused. And it doesn't look like anytime soon we are going to end the privatization of our military and escalations to other places like Pakistan. Nation of peace and America is innocent, right.

11. -sigh- Yes, you nailed it.
Unsolicited, probably unwelcome, advice: unless you can do a whole lot better you are probably wasting your time posting on rightwing websites. I mean it. You had opportunity to persuade me and simply gave up and went back to the pigeonholing. Believe it or not, even with people I strongly and enthusiastically disagree, I like to see that they are doing their best to communicate and persuade with strong arguments.

Cheers to you for the fortitude it takes to even go to those sites.

Take it easy, we'll have other opportunities to argue. It's very late here, good night.

12. It's not a rightwing website, it's a racing site.
Yeah, yeah, I know. But I like racing. So I have to put up with the wingers who make NASCAR a joke to the left. But there are liberals there too, so it's a good match at times.

I came at you accusing you of using rightwing smack, and some of it is, but that was wrong on my part. I don't agree with all Obama does, but I agree that a dem belongs in the WH and whatever hell it takes to keep him there, I'm going to raise. ;-)

Good night. I'm up because a leg cramp brought me out of deep sleep. LOL just desserts.

Sometimes a rightwinger sees the emperor has no clothes, doesn't make it a rightwinger talking point.

Doesn't make Hans Christian Andersen a 19th century Glenn Beck either or his story a banned book.

I agree on keeping a Dem in the WH if for nothing more than the SCOTUS, even if said Dem is really "above" Dem ideology.

One other concern I'll raise, I know "concern" is one of the banned or troubling words too. :)

When Obama's eight years are behind us, will people be even more confused by what liberal means? He's not but the right has catapulted the propaganda and continue to repeat the lie that he is one. When Obama takes shots at the right and left, with the right I have zero concern, at the left, every time it troubles me, when Obama himself reinforces the idea that lefty Progressive ideas are not fit to govern and the movements should be marginalized, how is he very different from FOX news and Glenn Beck himself? Yeah, I know Obama is not insane, but Glenn Beck wants Progressives on both sides marginalized as well. They make a weird and accidental form of alliance. I know that sounds crazy on the surface, but you brought the whole idea of people sounding like rightwingers or using their phrases and manipulations.

Anyway, good talking with you and Happy Spring or holidays to you.

13. Doesn't sound very worried to me.
Perhaps it's because Iran's on good terms with nearly every country that matters. Only a few "world powers" are against it - the US, UK, France and Germany, and of course Israel. Why should he be worried about more sanctions from these countries.

14. I always thought he was their Bush.
I think it's downright pitiful the way he's pleading to be attacked. Putting a generation in jail doesn't leave a lot of healthy young men for an army, though.

16. pleading to be attacked? Saddam tried cooperating and look where it got him
He allowed weapons inspectors to crawl all over his country and when we couldn't find any we still hung him.

I bet the Iranians were watching all that. They seen where the cooperation route got the Iraqis. We turned their country into a scene from a Mad Max movie.

What do you think?

8. Overthrowing Iran's first democratically-elected leader worked out really well for us, didn't it?
What do you do when the bully gets old and frail? You kick him, just like he kicked you.

Or better yet, you mouth off to him just outside his failing reach and you watch the veins pop out on his neck while his face turns red.

20. If Iran gets nuclear weapons it gets them..
I would hope that the administration tells them that if they ever use them though Iran will be a sea of glass 30 minutes later.

21. All they would get is a deterrent effect. Since they won't have enough to respond
to the US, they lose in any conflict.

Pakistan has nukes, that hasn't kept the US out. Instead it seems to have had the opposite effect.

Iran is essentially defenseless from the US. If anything, their having the weapon makes it more reason for the US to treat them with some dignity.

Your sig line makes me think you would have more compassion for the millions of innocent lives that gesture would cost, you know, turning the sand to glass but I guess that only extends to the US civilization?

How many centuries has it been since Iran invaded another country? How many countries have we invaded in just recent decades? We are the only nation to use those weapons. I think their use should be banned, but you want more glass? OK.

Please stop being afraid. That is how I read your post. I am sure it was unintentional though.
