Close Encounters of the Tea-Bagger Kind
Barbara Sehr

It's been two weeks since my own personal close encounter in Washington, DC, with the mental midgets of political mythology known as "tea-baggers " who rage against the 2008 election results.

These are the same folks with ACORN thought bubbles who fall not far from the Sister Palin tree. They had the audacity to spit on Congressman John Lewis of Georgia, a civil rights icon, and Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the first openly gay member of Congress with language more fitting to a Klan Rally.

Just days before the health care vote, as I walked up the steps of the US Capitol building, several in this group of hundreds had taken their "clown" role seriously." They were dressed in regulation clown suit-- bright red noses, platform shoes even larger than my own -- jumping up and down in cadence to "stop the spending!" As someone with a recollection of history in the days leading up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq exactly seven years before, I had to inquire about their passions for the billions spent by the previous administration on that seemingly questionable effort. "Why don't you go back where you came from you f*gg*ts!" was the intellectual response of the lead jester.

"I would if your ancestors hadn't stolen my land," said the Cherokee woman who was touring the halls of Congress with me. It became clear that there would not be a smoking of the peace bong in this environment, and we quickly made our way past the formidable security within the Capitol.
