2 tons of oil spilled onto Great Barrier Reef..
Edited on Mon Apr-05-10 11:37 AM by walldude
http://www1.voanews.com/english/news/asia/Chinese-Oil-Spill-Threatens-Australias-Great-Barrier-Reef-89916382.html

Australian officials warn that the Great Barrier Reef is in grave danger of being further contaminated by oil after a Chinese ship ran aground off Queensland. The vessel is stuck on a sandbar and has already leaked at least two tons of dark sludge into the water.

A frantic clean-up operation is under way where the Chinese-registered coal ship, Shen Neng 1, is aground in an area where commercial shipping is restricted to protect the world's largest coral reef.

About two tons of oil has seeped into the water so far from the damaged vessel, creating a slick up to three kilometers long.

And there is another 950 tons that could still leak out. But it's ok.. that place was a dump anyway. :eyes:

3. Agree, 11 barrels seems like a trivial amount compared to the Exxon Valdez oil spill. n/t

4. Right.. according to the article the spill is 3 miles long
Edited on Mon Apr-05-10 12:15 PM by walldude
by 300 feet wide, yeah it's nothing to worry about.

The reef stretches for more than 2,500 kilometers along Australia's northeast coast. It covers an area bigger than the United Kingdom and is largest living structure on earth. It is home to hundreds of thousands of species of marine life, many of which are rare.

But it's ok, a few tons of fucking oil won't do anything, I mean it's not as bad as the Valdez... yet

5. How thick is a film of oil 300' x 3 miles from 11 barrels of oil? I agree oil spills are bad but the
OP spill is hardly a major disaster.

6. It does not take a lot of oil to kill Corals
and we are losing coral around the world at a very large pace.
They produce habitat and oxygen for feeder fish that are eaten by larger fish that in turn are eaten by us.
The point is we are breaking our food chain down.

Plus the Valdese spill is still affecting the populations of the area because it still has not been cleaned up.

This is sickening. Hopefully the whole load does not spill.

8. Not to mention that the GBR is the biggest coral deposit on the
planet. Coral is in only 1% of the ocean but is home to 25% of the oceans species. This is not good already.

Hey thanks for the reply, after reading responses about how it's "only 11 barrels" and is "not so bad" I thought I mistakenly landed in freeperville.

11. Human hair is about 0.003" so the film would be about 1/15 as thick as a hair? Thanks n/t
