Why no love for Martin Luther King Jr Yesterday???
The man was murdered 42 years ago Sunday, and there was NOTHING here on DU for this American hero whose journey and struggle improved all of our lives! Elsewhere's Daughter, who first turned me onto this site, was equally shocked and dismayed during a phone conversation we had last night. Both of us are lily-white, and both of us KNOW that Martin's tireless efforts and sacrifice made America a better place for our asses!

Jesus H. Christ, there was more attention paid to this sad anniversary on MySpacethan here!

:argh:

3. Haven't been on DU for a couple of days...
...otherwise I might have posted something. There's no nefarious plot to obscure King's legacy. Honest.

4. Why didn't you or the other poster start a thread?
Just asking, don't mean to be snarky. Every year on Labor Day, I start a thread, and it is usually not well responded to in my opinion. Others don't seem to share my enthusiasm for this holiday. But I always start the thread anyway, and perhaps some are reminded of the importance of the day.

26. Yep. No harm in remembering his death...
...but honoring his life seems much more important, and I tend to do that more on the holiday.

8. I'm a total King fanatic (my classes spend about two weeks on him) but...
I just don't think you can conclude from the fact that no one posted about his murder's anniversary that he and his ideas don't get any respect around here. Hell, it's nearly impossible to be an American and not be directly influenced by the way he reshaped the understanding of liberty and equality in a free country.

You'll forgive me if I get a little more worked up about MLK Day and celebrating his legacy than I do over memorializing his funeral.

I noticed your OP deriding the board for not honoring King, but thought you might eventually figure it out..........

Not "everyone took a pass."

Mine was structured to provide perhaps more awareness about him and his connection to the present, for those who were not thinking about him on that day.

13. Sundays and holidays are slow. Last Sunday was a holiday - an important one to most Christians
Instead of observing MLK's death once year, why not celebrate his life daily?

37. There you go! Messing up a perfectly good poutrage!
I did, however, have a DU member tell me the other day when I cited King, Parks, and the college students who were killed in MS that the SCOTUS and "smart liberals acting in pragmatic ways" had more to do with our advances in civil rights than these activists.
