Former dogfighters, kids at risk of becoming dogfighters, and dog trainers are coming together to change a culture - the culture of dogfighting. Here's how they're doing it.

1. Isn't dogfighting now illegal in all 50 states?
That was my impression, unless that only applies to cockfighting. If there is a state where dogfighting is still legal, that's pretty depressing.

2. For the most part
Even if it is illegal, doesn't mean it isn't happening. That's one of the reasons that organizations like HSUS have to go undercover to find the activity and expose it.

Animal abuse is mostly illegal, and cockfighting and dogfighting are only two of the most rampant activities out there. Another one, pardon me if it's too graphic for anyone, is to steal small dogs and cats to give them to their "guard dogs" and get them really mean. There are so many horror stories out there, and it makes me very sad that I can only do a few things to help. Passing things on is one of them, though.

4. They're not the best organization to support
Give to your local animal shelter instead, not to an extremist organization which wants to ban all animal domestication.

5. That's not true of HSUS
I know that PETA has strongly objected to domestication, but HSUS is far more interested in different aspects of abuse, welfare and worldwide advocacy for animals. When I was living in California, I was working with HSUS on one of the state initiatives, and they were more in tune with the issue at hand and trying to make poisoning and steel-jawed traps illegal. Some organizations are a bit extreme--like every single group around, to one extent or another, but HSUS works through its office in D.C. to find ways to push for animal advocacy.
