At the meta level both these stories are connected...
Spent the last oh however long listening to ONE small news station in Puerto Nuevo, near Tecate, keeping this place informed on the goings on in Mexico since even our LOCAL critters fail... major fail.
But think about it, from the POV of Baghdad... and the ROE of the military and all this.
The critter had a firefighter from Tijuana come over to the studio, or call and he was VERY CRITICAL of the order by his Chief to deploy assets to Mexicali since the reserve is now very low in case they had a major quake in TJ. He was also very critical of the lack of comms between state agencies (electricity went down, and they actually used the web), and of a lack of a coordinated response.
From my perch OUTSIDE the disaster zone, it was actually pretty well coordinated, and all that, why there is no story. But think about this. Here is a CITY Firefighter going on the radio and being openly critical of his boss (and by extension the city council, on that also the Mayor).
Now lets go to Baghdad... where our boys killed people gathering news. We can have all the arguments as to whether they confused his lens with a gun, for the record it does happen, but here is the major difference. You would not have a public worker be that openly critical in the US, nor would you have a PRESS AGENCY carry him life in the middle of the day, DURING a disaster when they have like national coverage.
On the other hand the US Military had a cover up of that story, and remind me where these guys embedded with the Troops? Oh no, they were not.
That is all I have to say. We live in a figment of freedom folks.
Of course this is a marker of Empire as well.

3. "figment of freedom" - now that's worth 'borrowing';) k*r |

Embedded with the troops has one huge advantage, obviously. The military created the type of attitude that was required by the invasion and the invasion was an atrocity. This is what happens and there's no reason to withhold blame on those who went to the wrong country and the wrong time for the wrong reasons.
Welcome back:hi:

the last two days have been like surreal...
and at the meta level tells us even more of the US
I mean Mexico was going to be a mess (Because they have no building standards didn't you know?)
And when that did not materialize CNN was explaining THIS morning, why it didn't.
It wasn't because perchance they do have building codes, and perhaps we should do a story on why building codes work... NOPE, obviously it is all geology and they did not get enough a'shaking.
It was all about creating the myth, and reality be damned.
Now one of the stories I HEARD had the Governor of Baja actually talking about a coordinated response. so if they go there, we MIGHT see the story back in the news.
But all this desperate creation of myth is damn too obvious.
