Dead man caught ‘checking in’ at Liverpool John Lennon Airport

<snip>
TWO women tried to smuggle a dead relative on to a plane at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

The corpse was pushed in on a wheelchair – complete with sunglasses – to try to fool staff at the check in desk at JLA.

But as his two companions attempted to check him in for a flight to Berlin on Saturday, staff became suspicious and alerted the authorities.

The source said: “They tried to get him in by a wheelchair. He was wearing sunglasses.

“He was dead before they got him in the taxi and he had been dead for a day.”

It is believed the attempt to smuggle the body back was made to avoid fees for repatriation, sometimes costing up to £3,000.

Merseyside Police confirmed the man was dead on arrival at the airport.

16. I'm betting that they saw
the movie. Damn this is hilarious in a sad way - poor women just don't have the money to take him home in a coffin.

23. Wow, I'm sorry. I can believe that. My mom was refrigerated but by the time I got to see her...
... to say goodbye before her unembalmed remains were shipped off to the university medical school, I could detect an odor coming from her open mouth.

I can't imagine anyone thinking they could get away with what these two tried to do. They can't have been thinking too clearly.

6. yuck. Humans begin to stink very very quickly.
He had to have smelled dead.

Also did nobody notice he was a little "stiff"? At least they can't blame it on the airline food.

Of course, after four hours, they should have taken him to a doctor. :P

27. You know, it would be worth asking FedEx if they'd take an embalmed body in a casket...
But again, that would involve thinking clearly in the first place.

Friends of mine have suggested to me that I FedEx my luggage ahead on travels -- it's very cheap in the continental US, but turns out to cost 10 times as much to Europe, so not worth it.

And for a dead body....

It may just be that the time involved in certifying cause of death, talking to docs and cops and officials, sorting out how to do everything, then embalming, buying a suitably sealed casket, and regular shipping of same (with documents) was just too overwhelming for them to even begin to think through. Their FIRST mistake was in not notifying authorities, who would have led them through legal procedures.

I'll tell you though, this is the stuff of Urban Legend.

There will be stories. There ARE stories.
