Lesbian Teen Sent to 'Fake Prom' |
|
Hateful people hating. snip A judge said that the school could not bar McKinnen, with the understanding that she would be allowed to attend the new prom that parents were planning. However, McKinnen now says she was misdirected instead to a “fake prom,” which only five other students attended; meanwhile, the rest of the high school partied elsewhere at the parent-organized prom. http://www.thedailybeast.com/cheat-sheet/item/lesbian-teen-sent-to-fake-prom/high-school/?cid=cs:headline9

1. you know, the best revenge is success. |

Leave that shit hole, and never look back hon not for a second. Also, post who misdirected you on Facebook, and links to their pages, bios, you know anything a google search might find that a future employer like myself would look at when considering whether or not to hire someone in my diversity environment.
Revenge is also the best revenge.

2. Disgusting. And for what? |
|
Is any one of the kids and/or parents involved really going to look back 30 years from now and be proud of what they "accomplished"?
Worthless. All that time, energy, money invested into spreading hate.

4. How about the kids who went to "the other prom" that the parents created? |

I'd have boycotted that one or left it, knowing that Constance and her date weren't there.

There's a fake prom that only 7 students went to and a separate prom that I assume hundreds went to. Am I to believe that not ONE of those hundreds invited to the real deal had the decency to tell McKinnen about it? Are kids today really that pathetic?

20. I think the kids were angry -- not pathetic. |
|
The story wasn't as simply "anti-gay" as it was made out to be. Constance was openly lesbian and openly has a girlfriend. Think about that. How bigoted can her school and classmates be if lesbians are comfortable being out in the open?
The story began with ticket policy. Ticket policy is that males can bring a female guest and females a male guest on their ticket. Constance objected to not being able to bring her girlfriend as a guest on her ticket. The school said they believed allowing same sex guests would lead to friends pairing up to avoid having to buy tickets. Now -- her girlfriend is a sophomore -- so -- she couldn't buy her own ticket. As a compromise -- they said she could bring her girlfriend -- but she'd have to buy another ticket for her to avoid breaking guest policy as it pertained to tickets. Now -- there may have been a better solution -- but they didn't say she couldn't bring her girlfriend.
Now -- after that -- it was learned that Constance intended to wear a tux. That violated the dress code. Now -- surely we don't really believe that dress codes are necessarily about homophobia. Cultural events have codes that specify attire for males and females all the time. She objected -- and that's when they said if she showed up in a tux and it created a disturbance -- she would have to leave.
So -- objectively speaking -- while it may not have fit anybody's idea of perfect -- the school did make some effort to accomodate her. The issue about the tux is not something that's necessarily about anti-gay. Straight girls and boys unsuccessfully challenge dress codes all the time. Some straight girls would like to wear tuxes or a pantsuit instead of a dress -- and some boys don't want to wear a tux. So -- what's different about a lesbian that she should be able to wear pants but all the straight girls still have to wear formal/semi-formal dresses? If she was transgender -- it would be a different story -- but she doesn't claim to be transgender -- she's a female. So -- why should she be treated differently than other females when it comes to dress code?
So -- imagine being her classmates -- people who apparently accept her homosexuality just fine since she doesn't report any problems up to the prom thing. Suddenly -- because Constance wants to challenge the dress code -- she "stirs up" a national commotion that labels you all homophobic -- brings lawsuits that cast a dark cloud over your prom. To the nation -- it looks like people mistreated a lesbian -- but to her classmates -- it's Constance making a big mess of their prom over dress code. So -- they would be angry about the way they're being portrayed and about all the trouble -- wanting to "punish" her for what they see as trying to ruin their prom -- not exclude her for being a lesbian.
When people get mad at somebody who's gay -- it doesn't always have to be because they're gay. They had not told her that she and her girlfriend couldn't go. I'd be angry too if the nation and the court system was condemning me for something I hadn't done.

The school canceled the entire prom because Constance wanted to bring her girlfriend. You can try to excuse it away, but that's the crux of the situation. And when the other parents (along with the school's help) set up the "" prom, everyone Constance talked to about it directed her to the fake prom set up at the country club.
They lied. They hated. They hate her because she's gay. Deal with it. It's a festering pool oh homophobia there.
And they didn't accept her homosexuality because nobody told her about the "secret" prom. NOBODY
Not the teachers. Not the parents. Not the students.
Nobody.
They blamed her for the canceled prom in the first place because that's what the school wanted to happen. So yes, they hated her. And no, they don't accept her.
Stop trying to excuse bigotry, please.

For you to state that the fact that she was out means that the school wasn't homophobic is a ridiculous leap of logic. From what I've seen of the girl, she's very brave. I don't know how much harassment she's received for being a lesbian, but I wouldn't doubt if she received a lot of it.
With regard to ticket policy, that's a complete red herring because she never refused to buy a separate ticket.
With regard to the dress code, courts had already specified that she couldn't legally be turned away from the prom. So because these idiots couldn't get what they wanted through legal means, they had to trick a girl who had already gone through a ridiculous amount of hell so she couldn't get to her prom. That's what this boils down to. Because these morons couldn't get what they wanted through the law, they had to be pathetic sons of bitches and trick the girl.
As for the classmates, if they truly didn't want to be labeled homophobic, perhaps they could have found one amongst them who would have done the honorable thing and tell her about the prom ruse. The fact that none stood up and did the right thing tells me that they were, in fact, very homophobic.

24. I think this apologist crap is bullshit. |
|
It's like saying that white southerners never had a problem with blacks voting, they just didn't want people who couldn't read or couldn't do math or didn't know American history voting, because they really felt it was better for a voter to be educated. So therefore there was really nothing intended to be exclusionary about literacy tests or other tests to which they subjected blacks who wanted to vote. And when the blacks said there was, well, they were just raising a stink and making those poor white people look racist in order to get themselves some attention! They were just stirring up a lot of trouble, is all! :sarcasm:
