Crap, I knew it...the repukes are going to go with
legalization of dope for a platform ...with Palin leading the charge...

I knew it, I kept thinking that if the Dems didn't hurry up and get on it that the repukes would and they would get much of the youth and boomer vote just on this...

2. Those who this is most important to
likely don't have much of a propensity to vote anyway. I think they're fishing for the libertarian vote rather than the stoner vote.

10. I don't know about that.
I know as many stoners who do vote as those who do not. That's about the same percentage as in the general population who would be eligible to vote.

7. I've always thought that pot will be legalized when a critical mass of conservatives get behind it.
When a liberal supports legalization, we get tarred as radicals and hippies. Prominent conservatives can support it from a libertarian standpoint.

11. Complete over reaction to what was said on MSNBC/Tamron Hall
All she said was that a pot legalization org (sorry can't remember the actual name) had approached Palin to speak at their event for $25K, which she isn't likely going to accept since she seems to be getting $100K elsewhere. So unless she is already pro-legalization, I doubt this is something she'll sign on for.

14. This is a bigger deal than some of you are making it out to be...
Seeing as Republicans seem to be able to better at getting done what they run on since they don't take shit from anybody, and pot legalization being important to me, this would make me think twice at the voting booth. Especially if Obama keeps being a republican anyway.

Republican lite vs. Republican and I can legally smoke pot.

Really does make one think twice. And I fucking hate Sarah Palin.

17. Do You Really Trust the GOP to keep a promise like this?
IF they were to get on board, which I don't believe they will, it would just not be kept. Remember they are the ones that was going to do away with Roe V. Wade and did they? They like to keep a wedge issue and if they can make this one and can stomach saying it, they will.

19. The Montana Repo legislature passed industrial hemp back in 2001 0r 2003, and the repo governor
then (Martz) signed it into law.

A few years later medical MJ passed by voter initiative with a 62% majority vote.

Here in purple Montana , where MCcain beat Obama, it would be popular.

We have a very high rate of independents (non-affiliated) voters here.

20. one case doesn't make a trend
I don't know about that but it doesn't mean the majority of the GOP will follow. I can't see Kyl or McCain going with it. I wouldn't bet on one republican signing a bill enough to think the majority will. That is just too risky.

25. Here is the trend
http://openleft.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=11742

snip:

While legalizing marijuana is not a majority or a plurality position at this time, it is very close to becoming one. Not only do the long-term trendlines show a dramatic shift in favor of legalization, but a majority of the population under the age of 40 is already in favor of legalization. As such, despite no major political leaders advocating on behalf of it, right now it is only a matter of time--perhaps less than a decade--before legalizing marijuana becomes a majority position nationwide.

It should also be noted that, at 40-41% support, legalizing marijuana is more popular than all of the following:

* Opposing stricter gun control laws (40%)
* Congress (26-40%)
* The war in Iraq (39%)
* Decreasing immigration levels (39%)
* Privatizing Social Security (36%)
* Opposing investigating the Bush administration (34%)
* Opposing national, government run health insurance (32%)
* Vetoing stem cell research (31%)
* The Republican Party (31%)
* Dick Cheney (30%)
* George W. Bush (24-34%)
* Decreasing business regulations (28%)
* Rush Limbaugh (28%)
* Mitch McConnell (22%)
* Preventing the openly gay from serving in the military (17%)
* John Boehner (17%)

In short, legalizing marijuana is more popular than the Republican Party, most leading Republicans, and virtually the entire Republican platform.

While Palin may be obnoxious, pandering, and self serving, she isn't stupid. She sees where this is going.

It's a trend

I thought the offer to Palin was half-serious since it was extended to her after she turned down (or backed out of) a speaking engagement with a pro-liquor organization.
