I GOT A JOB!!
I'm a newly licensed 43 year old LPN and it's been tough. Everyone wants experience, but how do you get experience if nobody's willing to hire you? I did an internet search yesterday, one of many I've done since finishing school, and just started calling. The first place I called put me through to the HR lady, who was very frazzled. I asked if they hired LPN's, she said YES and then immediately told me that it was crazy there and I should come in at 10 the following morning. The conversation went so fast, I didn't even get a chance to ask if they were new grad friendly.

So, this morning I got there at 9:30 and she took me right in. At first, she seemed put off that I didn't have experience and I offered to leave...I said I'd understand if she didn't want to waste her time. She said she had already set me up to speak to the director of nursing, so I stayed. We talked a little and then I went to see the director. She said that she remembers what it was like being new and how hard it was to get a job. She also said that everyone just needs one break, that she liked the fact I was "mature", and that having no experience meant she could train me her way. We had a nice chat and she said she'd let me know by Friday or Monday of next week because I was their first interview. She had to call the corporate office for new grad salary info and said she'd call me later to let me know what the salary would be.

I got the call about an hour ago. First she mentioned the salary and then said "Oh, and I'm also calling to offer you the job"!! I thought I was going to fall off the chair!! I thanked her profusely and she said they'd let me know when my background check was finished and when orientation would start. I told her she just made my year because TOMORROW I file for my last unemployment check, unless they pass another extension!

Sorry to ramble, but I'm so, so relieved...and want to let everyone else know to hang in there! I hope everyone out there who's in my position ends up getting the kind of call I got today!! I hope everyone else finds the person that'll give them a chance and I hope that those in the position to do so will give someone a chance, that break they've been waiting months or years for!

Thanks for listening to me!

43. Thank you and you have no idea how grateful I am
to be given this chance! I realize that I really lucked out with this because it's been nothing but one rejection after another. I don't have any family and have been thinking the last few weeks about what I'd do if I lost my house, where would I go and what would I do with my dogs & cats. I've been in a very bad way these last few weeks and still can't get over how one phone call just compoletely changed everything!! I wish the same thing for everyone else!!

18. HAHAHAHAHAHA!
I didn't mean to insinuate... but your response was funny:)

My first thought was of nurses in my family... and some who went to college when women just didn't do that... it's an old profession... not as old as some, though:)

My mom is a retired psych nurse... oh, the stories she can tell! One of her best friends is a retired emergency room nurse... we heard some awesome stories from her too:) People do the weirdest things to themselves.

39. Psych & hospice are the areas I find really interesting
My plan is to continue on and get my RN, which will open up so many more opportunities for me. Psych was my favorite module in school!!

Talking about the oldest profession...I've been considering it lately, with unemployment running out and all, but that would be putting myself on the fast track to foreclosure, unless there's a market for old, lumpy, grumpy, stretch marked hookers!!

40. Thank you!
I hope it's a sign that good things are coming for the rest of us, too! I really want everyone who's in a bad way right now to have the same luck I did today. Over the past year, I've congratulated people when they've posted about getting a job and those posts gave me some hope that maybe things are getting better. I hope others have that hope now too, and find a way to hang in there until things get better.

I'm waiting for the day when I open up DU and the home page is nothing but "I GOT A JOB" announcements!!

47. The HR lady asked today why I changed careers
I told her that someone in my old job said "Oh, it's just your mid-life crisis", but when that woman turned 40, she showed up with a nose ring!! Call it what you want, but I just felt the need to DO SOMETHING with my life. I just couldn't sit behind a desk and shuffle papers from one pile to another anymore. Thinking that I might have to go back to doing that was really depressing.

My very first clinical experience told me I made the right move. The patient had advanced Alzheimer's and tried to pull out his feeding tube. I grabbed his hands, quietly told him to relax and that everything was OK, and his entire body instantly relaxed. He did a complete 180!! Each time he'd get agitated, I'd hold his hand and would get the same reaction. Now, maybe it was just a reflex action, I don't know...but just knowing that if I held his hand, he'd feel better got me hooked!!

21. Everything that's already been said, plus...
WAY TO GO!

I am so happy for you. I was in a similar situation about five years ago, except it was 180 degrees turned around. I was laid off from a Fortune 50 company during a restructuring and kept hearing "You're way overqualified (read: overpaid) for this job." It took me about a year (which was a nice break) and the job doesn't pay what the old one did, but it is a great place to work and I enjoy coming in every day.

51. I was afraid of the money aspect, too
I made good money before and always cringed when I wrote salary info on the applications. I thought for sure I'd be overlooked because of my lack of experience and the pay cut I'd be taking. Turns out, I'll be making about $4K less per year and with overtime/holiday pay, I'll probably end up making about the same as I did at the job that fired me for going to school in the first place! That means I'll actually be able to live on what I make, as opposed to having $200 left over for utilities, bills, food, etc. after the mortgage & car payment come out of my unemployment check each month. I took my 401k when I got fired and if it wasn't for that, I would've lost my house months ago. There's practically nothing left from the 401k and with unemployment running out tomorrow, I maybe could've survived a month and then that would be it for me. Talk about cutting it close!

52. Thanks, guys!
Every other word out of my mouth with the director today was "Thank you" and "You have no idea how much I appreciate you giving me this chance". The HR woman's only been there a month herself and said she and the director have some ideas about making changes to the nursing department, so maybe not having prior experience fits in with the changes they're making. Maybe that will make me easier to work with if I don't go in with any preconceived notions about how things are done. I also told her I'm going to do my best to prove she made the right choice in hiring me!

One of my classmates already told me "Make sure you pick up the pace now! You're not going to be able to talk to people and listen to their stories like you did in school"!! So, I need to work on getting myself to be a little more speedy with my tasks. I think that will come with practice...I HOPE that will come with practice!!

I can't wait!! While I was in school, that became my "job". School finished in January and then it was time to prepare for the licensing exam. I took that March 9th and ever since I've been climbing the walls. I guess you could say that looking for a job became my job, but the depression, anxiety, and frustration was just overwhelming. I'm still sitting here saying "WHEW"!

85. Thanks for giving yourself the chance!
I mean it. My elder daughter faced the same thing last year. The company she worked for went bankrupt, and she was
only a year out of college. All the jobs in her field demanded three to five years of experience. But instead of
saying "I don't have the experience they want," she applied anyway, and went to every interview she was allowed to
have. One of them clicked. They liked her despite her lack of experience, and decided to take a chance on her. The
pay's not great, but she can learn and get a better-paid position there if she sticks around and learns the ropes,
which she now has a chance to do. You just need that one break, and it never shows up of its own accord.

Sometimes, if they talk to you and you can make them see you're "teachable", you can get in the door!

I had been wishing that someone would at least interview me, just so that I could let them see I'm not a moran! Getting that interview was most of the battle and I only got mine yesterday because the HR lady was so quick on the phone, I didn't get the chance to ask if they were new grad friendly! So, it was really a little luck in every possible step along the way.

101. Thank you, Mimosa!
So many people are desperate and hurting now, it's just horrible! I filed for my last unemployment check this morning and even with having an offer, seeing it say 'BENEFITS EXHAUSTED' still turned my stomach.

I've been so worried about what was going to happen, if I'd lose my house, if I'd have to give up my dogs and cats...which would've killed me. I was even wondering if a full tank of gas would be enough to do the job if I left my truck running in the garage. I was in a very, very bad way....

Even when I walked into the HR office yesterday and saw her face when she realized I had no experience, I just wanted to slink out the door, go home, get under the covers and just stay there forever!! Once we started talking and she got friendlier, everything started to change. When I walked out of there, I was so hopeful and felt so much better. I tried not to get my hopes up too much because I didn't want to be disappointed, but I couldn't help feeling good.

I went from being so, so down to feeling like I was floating on air and having to pinch myself in a matter of hours!! It sounds so corny, but if I could get this break, everyone else can too and that's what I want people to keep telling themselves.

A good friend of mine got laid off 10/09, right after she turned 58. She was contemplating going to school for medical billing and about a month ago she got a job. She's doing A/R in a company that's training her to do medical billing, so she's now getting paid while learning a new career...at 58 years old!

DON'T GIVE UP!!!

104. Thank you so much!
I know the bad days come along with the good and am hoping that even the bad days will be easier to deal with if I always remember why I'm there! One of my classmates & I were talking last night about how depressing it is to have to live in a nursing home, being cared for by strangers while your body & mind fail. Not having family or friends just makes it more sad.

If I know that I helped someone feel better or made them forget about their troubles for a little bit, then I think I'll be able to handle the bumps!

Wish her luck for me, especially with that rotten NCLEX exam! I swear, all they put you through to just get your license is a test in itself!

Tell her when she's looking for a job to not make the same mistake I did. DO NOT bring up experience when you're making your phone calls unless they specifically ask!! I think if that HR woman had thought to ask me on the phone, I'd still be looking for a job. Tell your niece that getting the interview is the most important thing, so tell her to keep the lack of experience to herself until she's face to face with HR. It's not as easy to turn you away when you're standing right in front of them, as it is to just brush you off over the phone. If they meet her and talk to her, she's got a much better shot at getting hired with no experience!

109. I knew a woman, JoAnne, here in New Jersey whose husband -
- abandoned her and her young daughter. She was on welfare for two years, which she supplemented on the sneak by doing housework. She eventually took advantage of a state training program and became an LPN.

I don't believe she had any trouble finding a job (this was back in the late 80s) and while she was working at a small hospital she became friendly with a cardiac patient who was fifteen years older than she. It turned out this fellow was introverted, lived with his wealthy mother and was so disabled by his last heart attack he needed home care. JoAnne quit her hospital job and went to work for them and she absolutely loved the job.

Within a year the man's mother died. The man asked JoAnne to marry him and she did. About a year later he died and left JoAnne several million dollars and a grand house.

That's the only Cinderella anecdote I know but I thought it would fit neatly into this thread.

Good luck in your new career! :)

120. Congrats! I got a nursing job after 14 years off with my kids.
Everyone i was in the re-entry program with was saying how few jobs there were out there for anyone. Teaching and nursing used to be the professions we could always get a job in. I tried to think of something to encourage my kids to study in college that would secure them a job eventually and couldn't think of anything so they are following their interests Politics and history. hopefully they'll at least enjoy college more and worry about the job market later. Supposedly Portland Oregon has 2,000 unemployed teachers looking for jobs. Good luck on your job and life experiences are a big part of being a nurse. What a great boss!

123. Congrats to you, too!
My son is a performing arts major. I told him to pursue what he loves because how many posts are on DU about people with multiple degrees in business that can't find a job. I told him to follow his dream while he's young because I didn't want him to end up like me...having a job I hated and having to change careers later in life. I said all that matters is that you can make enough money to support yourself, so if you don't end up being a star but can find steady work as an extra on the stage or even behind the scenes, then you're a success. You can't ask for anything more than being able to earn a living doing something you love.

I'm trying to talk him into going to the RENT auditions this weekend at NJPAC! He knows that play by heart, including all the songs, and I know he could get some kind of part. He doesn't have a head shot, so I said to either see if anyone at school could do it or we could do it ourselves. I've got a camera and photo paper. It might not be as professional as everyone else, but if he's strong enough in the audition then it might not matter. I know he wants to do it, but he's afraid. I told him he has to get past that fear and once that first REAL audition is under his belt, he'll be more confident in the future.

127. Fantastic!
Now, a little unsolicited advice...take it or leave it...:D

You are already well on your way to make the next step, especially if there are tuition benefits available...my advice, get at least an Associate RN...then, just about every door in Nursing will be open to you. Just another point here, if there is a VA Med Facility in your area, if you decide to go into something else, you might do wqell to look into them.

Congratulations! So glad to hear you have gotten such wonderful news...;hug:

129. Thank you and YES, RN is next on my list
One of the places I applied to was the NJ Veterans Home in Paramus.

They do offer tuition reimbursement and I intend to take full advantage of it, along with certification courses for as many things I can find. The school I went to is offering infusion therapy and wound care seminars to prepare for certification in May. I need to see what kind of education they offer in house and plan to take whatever education they'll give me. Having that RN is the key to all sorts of opportunities. Since I'm already "mature", one thing I wouldn't mind doing when I get a little too mature to be running around on my feet for 8 hours is teaching! I know there's a shortage of teachers at the nursing schools and wouldn't mind winding down my career with a teaching gig.

133. There you go!
One of the most progressive schools was actually at FT Sam Houston in the Army...:D

They had no problem at all trying something "new"...virtually all of the burn treatments came from there years ago, and they are still trying all kinds of new stuff. They pushed holistic care, better bedside manners, the vital aspect of Nursing, to the point where it was essentially more conducive to pt care and better outcomes because they spent time w/the pt's as opposed to an in/out visit from a physician...PA's too, they went whole hog in the PA/Nurse Practitioner aspect. Medical care is much better because of the training "auxiliary" staff have over MD's...:D

Once again...Congrat's...

141. Where I live LPNs and RNs write their own tickets.
I am sorry you had to suffer at all, especially since you decided to make a noble career out of helping the suffering.

Best wishes!

143. RN's definitely have the advantage in NJ
There's one hospital I know of that hires LPN's, so our only choices tend to be nursing homes and home healthcare. But the big sticking point is the experience. Everyone I talked to wanted at least a year, which is impossible to get if no one will hire you! It's crazy!!

142. CONGRATULATIONS!
I am so excited for you!

I hope the job will be everything you hope it will be, you'll get tons more experience, and again, CONGRATULATIONS!

Here's to those willing to give a chance, and those who have the courage to ask for that chance! :toast:

:woohoo:

144. Hear, hear!
I hope that if HR managers or those in a position to hire read this thread, maybe they'll take a chance on the next person who might not have experience, but is so eager to learn. Or the more "mature" person with years of experience that still has something valuable to offer. Or the middle-aged person who, for whatever reason, is embarking on their second career and just needs a break to get it going! The employee who gets that break, that chance, will NEVER forget it!
