3. What is with all the earthquakes?
I know that they occur all the time without usually making the news, but there have been a lot in the 7.0 or greater range recently.

4. Any more news?
No news might be good news - frequently there are strong quakes that cause next to no damage - the area's too remote, the conditions aren't there for a tsunami, the quake was so deep that energy's dissipated before it can do anything destructive. OTOH, maybe Sumatra's nearly completely destroyed, but because communications were cut off, nobody knows about it.

Here's hoping it's the former.

5. MSNBC reported it was 29 miles underground.
No tsunami risk.

6. Yeah, beginning to sound like the former.
In other words, I'm guessing the quake caused little damage.

Indonesia lifts tsunami alert after major quake off northern Sumatra

INDONESIA has lifted a tsunami warning after a major earthquake hit off northern Sumatra early today.

There has been no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the tremor, Reuters reported.

Thailand has cancelled its tsunami alert, saying that only small waves were generated by the tremor.

The quake was initially measured at a magnitude of 7.8 but this was later downgraded to 7.7 by the US Geological Survey (USGS).

It struck at a depth of 31km, just off northern Sumatra, at 5.15am local time (8.15am AEST).
