President George W. Bush
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

Today, in your veto message regarding the bipartisan legislation just passed on Operation Iraqi Freedom, you asserted that you so decided because you listen to your commanders on the ground.

Respectfully, as your former commander on the ground, your administration did not listen to our best advice. In fact, a number of my fellow Generals were forced out of their jobs, because they did not tell you what you wanted to hear -- most notably General Eric Shinseki, whose foresight regarding troop levels was advice you rejected, at our troops' peril.

The legislation you vetoed today represented a course of action that is long overdue. This war can no longer be won by the military alone. We must bring to bear the entire array of national power - military, diplomatic and economic. The situation demands a surge in diplomacy, and pressure on the Iraqi government to fix its internal affairs. Further, the Army and Marine Corps are on the verge of breaking - or have been broken already - by the length and intensity of this war. This tempo is not sustainable - and you have failed to grow the ground forces to meet national security needs. We must begin the process of bringing troops home, and repairing and growing our military, if we are ever to have a combat-ready force for the long war on terror ahead of us.

---snip---

As someone who served this nation for decades, I have the utmost respect for the office you hold. However, as a man of conscience, I could not sit idly by as you told the American people today that your veto was based on the recommendations of military men. Your administration ignored the advice of our military's finest minds before, and I see no evidence that you are listening to them now.

Edited on Thu May-03-07 05:14 AM by AndyA
right before they send the SOB in the White House the EXACT SAME BILL HE JUST VETOED.

And they need to tell him, THIS IS IT. WE ARE NOT WRITING ANOTHER BILL. Sign it or you will be cutting funding to the troops, and you will be ending the war. Stand firm, do not roll over for this lunatic.

They've already agreed to drop the withdrawal language.

And they'll wonder why the voters retaliate in 2008.

People will feel like it doesn't matter if they vote or not. Be it Democratic or Republican, none of them will do what they know the American people want anyway, so why bother?

This is a bad move on the part of the Dems. I only hope they have something else going on that we don't know about yet.

After all, they know why they were voted in back in November. If they ignore that, they should also realize there's little reason to retain them.

20. The Washington Post reported that, but . . .
It's apparently not true, at least according to people who have actually called Pelosi's and Reid's offices.

5. the BIG oversight
the big oversight of Eaton and others who have spoken the same sentiments is they still recognize bush as "the commander guy"

They need to re-focus and recognize bush as "Commander Cuckoo Bananas"

Also, they need to point out how bush is setting up the "generals on the ground" to take the fall.

13. "Compromise"
is a two way street, when you have one side doing all the giving its no longer called a "compromise" its a surrender. IMO those doing the surrendering deserve all the criticism those of us counting on them to represent our position can muster. BTW, the real looser will be the troops.

14. Not only that, you don't keep "compromising" when the other side
DOESN'T so that eventually the other side ends up getting everything it wanted. This has been the daily scenario for the Bush Administration since the get go. It's time to say NO. NOT ONE MORE STEP.

How do those assholes like Rush and Hannity explain this? As the demented ramblings of an old general so out of his mind that he had to retire? As a closet Democrat who infiltrated the highest echalons of our armed forces?

I am thrilled that he is writing this publicly. But knowing what we know about the political make-up of the officer corps, I can't help wondering whether he voted for Bush (and perhaps twice at that)--and I can't help suspecting that he did.

31. Can you say DRAFT ?
Between what is already committed and what the generals want "on the ground" leaves a shortage of half a million troops.
So it's either all in or all out. The longer we stay on the ground the closer we come to phase two, Iran.
Enough BS!

34. This is the kind of letter that gives me faith in our military
I've listened to so many republicans in the last few days since the veto, and it makes me wonder if
they are mentally stable. It may be that they don't understand that this is not our war. At any rate,
they're trying to brainwash the people into thinking that we're rooting for failure. They know damned well what they say is a lie, but they just keep on.

Republicans stick together, and it shows them for what they really are: Very Stupid! :spank:

37. The voters at the polls & commanders on the ground...
don't carry a whole lot of weight with the "decider". His neo-conned mind is made up long before sensible military advice is even provided, and contrary election results don't phase him in the slightest. His defining motto: "It's the Ideology Stupid!". More correctly it should read "It's the Stupid Ideology!".
