A Web site run by the Chicago Republican Party's political director features a picture of naked woman (photo is NSFW).

ChicagoGOP.com, operated by GOP Media, posted a blog entry today discussing how the mistress of former Democratic candidate for president John Edwards, Rielle Hunter, has publicized their affair. The post, credited to blogger, Lumi Boldovici, likens her to hetaera, a sect of ancient Greek women who acted as concubines.

"This is a free society and by all means I never advocate censorship. But I do believe in the strong virtue and moral fabric of the American public that has the power to say 'NO' to this kind of inappropriate and debasing behavior," the post says.

GOP Media is a consultancy operated by Tom Swiss, the local party's political director, according to state records.

Swiss says he sees nothing wrong with the photo, and supports Boldovici.

I've witnessed this for 30 years, and nothing ever changes regarding moral hypocrisy.

For example, Larry Flynt has dedicated most of his life to pointing out the hypocrisy of the moralists and has succeeded in rubbing their faces in it on more than one occasion. Another always rises up for every moralist he takes down.


Do we expect that people will abandon the Republican party over this?


The only thing that will happen is, at best, you'll get a media frenzy for a few days, with barking dogs and wagging fingers. In the end, if it is remembered at all, it will be remembered for the photo and how - yet again - a bare breast made the news.

It is exceedingly difficult to "press the hypocrisy" issue without appearing like a hypocrite ourselves.


Better to ignore it and concentrate on real "pressing" issues, like the Consumer Financial Protection Agency legislation pending in the senate.

Or perhaps you have a different best-outcome scenario?

It would make a world of difference. A lot of people don't see the hypocrisy unless it's shoved in their faces. The GOP is the party of hypocrisy. I think this needs to be shouted from the rooftops until people get it. And yes, I do expect that people will abandon the republican party if it's handled in the proper manner.
