Anybody who messes with WVA coal miners and their families is looking to shake Jesus' hand in a hurry. And I doubt any jury in the state would convict the guy that pulled the trigger. True story: first time I went to visit my college girlfriend's family down in Ivydale, WV (Clay County), we decided to go down to the one saloon in town (Irene's) for a beer. We walked in and there was a charred hole in the floor about 4 feet by 6 feet. Turned out a few nights before they'd thrown a couple of drunk coal miners out for making trouble, and the two old boys had come back in their truck about an hour later and tossed a lit stick of dynamite in the open front door. Nobody was hurt aside from a few flying splinters, but that's the kind of folks we're talking about. I doubt they'll take this kind of provocation lying down.

75. I've spent quite a bit of time in that part of the country

skiing, camping, hiking, white water rafting...beautiful place, depressingly poor really but nice, friendly people if you treat them with respect. I don't think I've ever met anyone from WV who was not related or somehow connected to someone who works in the mines.

My concern here is that these nutters will set someone off and it will turn violent. I can't bring myself to care what happens to the nutters but the WV people have been through enough without ending up with some legal trouble.
