Santorum chides Steele for 'disarray' at RNC

Santorum seemed to criticize Steele's penchant for public appearances, suggesting that the media attention to the RNC was detracting from his core duties as chairman.

"He needs to operate the organization. That's what an RNC chairman's first job is. If you have time and if you have the ability, then yes, do radio interviews, do TV interviews, go around the country," the former conservative senator said. "But the first thing you have to do is make sure we have the resources, that those resources are spent well so that candidates have the support that they need."

Santorum was defeated for reelection in 2006, but has been looking to resurrect his political career with a challenge to President Barack Obama in 2012. Santorum has been openly mulling a presidential bid, having acknowledged trips to primary states like Iowa and New Hampshire. He'll also be traveling to this weekend's Southern Republican Leadership Conference (SRLC), a key event for White House hopefuls.

Santorum said that while the RNC seemed to be in "disarray," he rejected the idea that Republicans as a whole were out of control, pointing to the successes of the party's other campaign committees, like the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), and the Republican Governors' Association (RGA).

"I would say the disarray is at the RNC, I would not say the disarray is in the party," he said. "There are other places that are running campaigns. There are lots of other organizations...and they're actually doing very, very well."
