1. The drug war has most definitely
raised the price of Weed to unacceptable levels, in addition to other, more pernicious effects.

3. Plenty of drug warriors right here on DU..
We can't even agree on legalizing pot, let alone anything nearly as dangerous as alcohol.

6. i didn't realize there were people on DU who were against pot legalization/decrim
wow

i know plenty of very rightwing people who are for legalizing it

imo, it's a commonsense issue, not a partisan one

god knows TONS of peoople all over the political spectrum are for it

11. Decrim and legalization are really not the same thing..
Alcohol was "decriminalized" during Prohibition, it was never illegal to possess or consume alcohol, just to sell, manufacture or import it.

And yet Prohibition was an abject failure, so much so that in a mere thirteen years public opinion swung far enough that diametrically opposed Constitutional Amendments were passed, a truly dramatic shift in the public mood in such a short length of time.

It's still extremely difficult to find any politicians who support legalizing pot, let alone bringing the drug war to a close.

13. decrim is a steppimg stone
basically it says govt doesn't care if you smoke it in the privacy of your home or at a party, just don't do it in public

the first PD i worked for, my chief told me exactly that. and encouraged us to ignore it

14. That's the way things were for alcohol during Prohibition?
If it was such a benign state of affairs with respect to alcohol during Prohibition then why was the 21st Amendment passed repealing Prohibition?

19. it has to do with enforcement
during prohibition, there was an entire criminal enterprise built up around production and distribution of alcohol, that the govt. fought against.

in the case of MJ, it is EASY to grow, and decrim is a STEPPING stone to legalization

it's effectively decrim'd now, where i work. nobody gives a flying fuck about some guy with a couple of buds of weed.

guys with major grow ops get fucked with

doods growing a couple of plants in their closet don';t, and routine possession is routinely ignored by local cops

i know cops who haven't done a single misdemeanor mj case in YEARS.

incrementalism may be suboptimal but it's more realistic.

16. They're not drug warriors -- they are drug worriers.
Don't think Marines.

Think gun-toting, home-invading, purse-lipped church ladies.

20. I just don't want to give them any credit for acting like warriors. They don't.
More like purse-lipped burglars without a shred of bravery or decency.

8. I agree.
Huge amounts of money are wasted on it, civil rights are trampled under it, and the power of the state grows because of it, and millions of harmless people are incarcerated because of it.

There should be no laws against what a person decides to put into their own bodies. What you choose to do to your own body is the ultimate freedom.
