Sean Hannity on the Civil War
(Lynchburg, VA) Fox News's Sean Hannity spoke to an overflow audience of sociology and political science students at Liberty University last night. Among the issues the pro-American advocate addressed was the true causes of the Civil War.

“The liberal democrats are attempting to re-write history,” Hannity told the students, 'by pushing the slavery issue into the reality of our nation's proud history. They seek to hide the true causes, which are found in the Bill of Rights. States' rights, religious freedoms, and the capitalist economic system were at stake then, exactly as they are being threatened today.”

When a reporter from AP attempted to question Hannity on the freedom of religion issue, Hannity pointed out that this was yet “another example of the secular press attacking the leadership of great men such as Rev. Jerry Falwell. Believe it or not, buddy, the United States is a Christian nation. We are promoting the exact system of government that God Himself would choose, if He had all the facts available.” The AP reporter, who wore a full beard, was escorted from the auditorium by security forces.

“There have always been 'poor people',” Hannity noted. “All of the slaves in the north were poor. But many in the south, as Patrick Buchanan has documented, enjoyed a much higher standard of living than they had in the nation of Africa. Liberals don't want this truth out there. They want to stir the pot with lies.”

Regarding the attempts by Mr. Obama to “force a socialist welfare state down the throats of unsuspecting, uneducated poor people,” Hannity pointed to the fact that the majority of low-income citizens in America's cities flock to their own neighborhoods. “Why, they are so happy to be there, that they over-crowd apartments. This is in direct violation of fire codes. Why is it that liberals do not wish to address this lawlessness?”

1. Hannity remains one of very few people who
if I ever run into on the street will be immediately kicked in the nuts. I keep hoping he's going to do one of his "man on the street interviews" in front of the faux noise building when I'm down there.

I think it would make for great TV.

4. Hannity is an uneducated idiot, and it shows
He didn't attend college, and I suspect that he didn't pay much attention in either high school or junior high. Sadly, he has just enough charisma to charm and influence the other uneducated idiots in his audience. This makes him some sort of faux authority, thus giving him a voice and gravitas that he doesn't deserve.

Yes, there are people out there who are that ignorant, who have access to the radio, tv, what have you.

Remember Sean is not a well educated man either... watch Colbert... yes he's is a character, a caricature... sadly Sean, and Bill and the rest are not. They are as serious as a heart attack. And to give them the benefit of the doubt, if they didn't believe all of it at one time, by now they have internalized all of it, and then some.

20. Hannity ought to read a few of the Confederate States' Articles of Secession.

Those documents make it clear that the Civil War was about the right to own human beings (slaves). There were plenty of complaints with the Union, but the right to own humans was the only issue big enough to bring war/secession.

Following the Civil War, "States' Rights" simply meant the right to discriminate where I come from -- Georgia.

I remember several years ago listening to one of these nuts on the Randi Rhode's radio program. The wingnut on the program was offering the argument that the poor white farmers weren't fighting to preserve slavery. I'll never forget Rhandi Rhodes comment -- something to the effect, "Mr. Beauregard ain't going to pick his own cotton."

In any event, Hannity is full of it as usual. But, he's merely speaking for/to those who tune in to listen to such crud.

99. Here is a link to some of the declarations of secession - Yes, Hannity ought to read them
Edited on Thu Apr-08-10 10:29 PM by Minnesota_Lib
http://sunsite.utk.edu/civil-war/reasons.html

The opening sentences from the Mississippi declaration:

In the momentous step which our State has taken of dissolving its connection with the government of which we so long formed a part, it is but just that we should declare the prominent reasons which have induced our course.

Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin.

From the South Carolina declaration:

The General Government, as the common agent, passed laws to carry into effect these stipulations of the States. For many years these laws were executed. But an increasing hostility on the part of the non-slaveholding States to the institution of slavery, has led to a disregard of their obligations, and the laws of the General Government have ceased to effect the objects of the Constitution. The States of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa, have enacted laws which either nullify the Acts of Congress or render useless any attempt to execute them. In many of these States the fugitive is discharged from service or labor claimed, and in none of them has the State Government complied with the stipulation made in the Constitution. The State of New Jersey, at an early day, passed a law in conformity with her constitutional obligation; but the current of anti-slavery feeling has led her more recently to enact laws which render inoperative the remedies provided by her own law and by the laws of Congress. In the State of New York even the right of transit for a slave has been denied by her tribunals; and the States of Ohio and Iowa have refused to surrender to justice fugitives charged with murder, and with inciting servile insurrection in the State of Virginia. Thus the constituted compact has been deliberately broken and disregarded by the non-slaveholding States, and the consequence follows that South Carolina is released from her obligation.

Texas:

Texas abandoned her separate national existence and consented to become one of the Confederated Union to promote her welfare, insure domestic tranquility and secure more substantially the blessings of peace and liberty to her people. She was received into the confederacy with her own constitution, under the guarantee of the federal constitution and the compact of annexation, that she should enjoy these blessings. She was received as a commonwealth holding, maintaining and protecting the institution known as negro slavery-- the servitude of the African to the white race within her limits-- a relation that had existed from the first settlement of her wilderness by the white race, and which her people intended should exist in all future time. Her institutions and geographical position established the strongest ties between her and other slave-holding States of the confederacy. Those ties have been strengthened by association. But what has been the course of the government of the United States, and of the people and authorities of the non-slave-holding States, since our connection with them?

The controlling majority of the Federal Government, under various pretences and disguises, has so administered the same as to exclude the citizens of the Southern States, unless under odious and unconstitutional restrictions, from all the immense territory owned in common by all the States on the Pacific Ocean, for the avowed purpose of acquiring sufficient power in the common government to use it as a means of destroying the institutions of Texas and her sister slaveholding States.

Come again, Mr. Hannity?

106. "States Rights", they said?
Borrowing from the post from Minnesota_Lib, highlighting how secession was against "states rights" (for northern states).

32. Revisionist Civil War history continuing, first cousin to WWII Holocaust deniers.
This foul stench is being ratcheted up by the ignorant. About 20 years ago I recall some teenagers putting a burning cross on the lawn of an African American church. An apologist defended the teenagers to me (we both knew them) that they did not know what they were doing what the cross was where it came from. As one who knew them I could testify to their ignorance but they full well knew in this instance what a burning cross symbolized "ignorance was no excuse" even if they did not know the history of the KKK. Hannity, Beck, and the Neo-GOP-(Dixiecrat) revisionist know what they are doing and deserve no comfort from their ignorance even considering their boundless delusional ignorance.

34. People keep saying the Civil War was about states' rights
and not slavery. What they forget is that the states' rights involved keeping slaves and admitting more slave-owning states into the Union.

And as for that socialist bit, my husband mentioned an interesting historical tidbit that he picked up the other day while watching a program on World War II. Apparently it was the socialist party in France that got paid vacation time for workers, so the next time teabaggers are going on about socialism, I want to ask if they want to forego their paid vacations. Wonder if Seany-boy would like to give up his paid vacations?

101. I would encourage everyone to do this in stores all over the country.
I will be "restocking some shelves" at my local Kroger store tonight. Just pick up three copies of this shit excuse for a book, and continue shopping. When you reach the aforementioned isle of interest, just slyly make a new place for your mistaken purchase.

Can you imagine if this was happening everywhere? They would have to pull the book from the shelves, or lock it up somewhere so morons that actually wanted it would have to request it or some such.

Sounds like FUN TO ME!

even if you were right in one point and one point alone... it was also about state rights...

We entered the war as a bunch of disparate STATES, we left that as a COUNTRY... I am sure Sean that is alien to you

By the way what Sean and their ilk want is to fight another glorious and honorable civil war where they can impose on the rest of us their twisted ideas, some of which aren't that far from the Taliban.

Oh and no, Sean will not get his hands dirty... that is for the poor shmucks who will get to actually become trigger pullers. Same thing happened in the civil war, the leaders, for the most part, had OTHERS serve for them.

54. Perhaps the North wouldn't care about 'States Rights' if it wasn't for slavery
There are times I think that perhaps 'State Rights' aren't a bad idea, especially when these anti-abortion idiots keep pushing their laws into the court. I keep remember that if RoeVWade is overturned at least I still live in a state with very sensible abortion laws (delaware).

But the overwhelming bad thing about 'States Rights' during civil war times was one thing - Southern States wanted the rights to own slaves that were paid nothing, housed poorly and many times treated inhumanely to the point that slaves were personal posessions. That alone was one of the biggest proponents as to why the Civil War started.

Perhaps if there was never any slaves in this country, 'State Rights' would have taken on a whole new meaning and who knows if there would have ever been a civil war.

Hannity is full of shit but then again we all knew that!

110. Can you believe this schmuck? Look at this here from Raw Story:
Pat Buchanan: ‘Both sides were right’ in the Civil War

Bloggers suggest MSNBC should ban 'racist who defends slavery'

Did conservative commentator Pat Buchanan cross a line when he appeared to defend slavery during a debate on MSNBC's Hardball?

That's the question political observers are asking after Buchanan told a panel he believed "both sides were right" in the Civil War.

The comment came during a discussion of Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell's omission of the issue of slavery in a proclamation reinstating Confederate History Month in the state. Buchanan argued that McDonnell was right to ignore slavery because that wasn't the core issue that prompted Virginia to leave the Union and join the Confederacy.

"Virginia did not secede over slavery," Buchanan said. "Virginia stayed in the union when Lincoln was elected. ... What took them out of the Union was when Abraham Lincoln said, We want 75,000 volunteers, your militia and your soldiers in Virginia, to attack the deep South and bring them back into the union. They said, We're not going to kill our kinsmen. That's how Virginia left the union."

119. It's satire
The Onion doesn't have a monopoly on it.

It's not as well done as The Onion, but here are some clues:

"We are promoting the exact system of government that God Himself would choose, if He had all the facts available.” The AP reporter, who wore a full beard, was escorted from the auditorium by security forces.

An obvious play on the RW-generated stereotype that terrorists have beards. Plus, Hannity would never claim his 'god' did not have all the facts available.

“Why, they are so happy to be there, that they over-crowd apartments. This is in direct violation of fire codes. Why is it that liberals do not wish to address this lawlessness?”

This plays up the RW stereotype that poor people love their condition and "choose" to be poor.

DUers apparently do not have all their facts available either. Vile and ignorant and Sean Hannity is, this is a satirical jab at him. Not a great one, but an attempt nonetheless.
