For iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad owners. Massive OS upgrade coming this Summer.
Edited on Thu Apr-08-10 02:01 PM by onehandle
Steve Jobs was just on stage.

iPhone 4 will offer:

- Multitasking with extensive new dock, folders.
- Skype and other VOIP support
- Desktop class notifications throughout OS and apps
- Unified mailbox (thank you, thank you, thank you)
- Greatly increased security
- An intense social gaming network (nintendo, sony, microsoft, others crying)
- 'iAd' A new ad system may not seem like a win for users, but it is. Free app makers will now be able to make money. Which will enable them to make more and better apps. Many cheap apps could become free apps. The iAd system is OS based - Ads can now keep you in the app if you click on the add. The ads can be interactive including downloads, videos, games and more.

Steve showed an incredible in app ad for 'Toy Story 3.' Smooth and animated, made with HTML5 (The Flash Killer).

Buy your Apple Stock, kiddies.

--- ok there is some bad news. Some features (like multitasking) will not work on the original iPhone or the iPhone 3G. I never got the 3GS. I will be upgrading to the new iPhone coming this Summer.

Update: 'We are releasing it to users for iPhone and iPod touch this summer, for iPhone 3GS and the iPod touch 3rd generation (32 and 64GB models from fall 2009). AND for iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2nd generation, they will run "many things," but there are some things they won't run, like multitasking. And we're bringing iPhone OS 4 to the iPad this fall.'
(From Macworld's live update stream)

3. Does that upgrade include Dropped Call/Call Fail prevention for the iPhone?

8. The ipad should call the iphone "mini me".
I'm beginning to think that "Call Fail" and " Can't open page" is my home page.

6. Thank God they found out that people want that before it's too late!
Now those folks with the giant iPhone can talk AND send email at the same time, as long as there are no attachments.

10. Luckily, the resale value of iPhones is high.
Edited on Thu Apr-08-10 01:48 PM by onehandle
When I sold my 1G on ebay, I sold it for $70 more than I paid for it.

Currently, I can sell my 3g for $50 to $100 more than I paid for it.

Most iPhones out there are 3GS models which will run the 4.0 OS.

I've got the 3g, but was thinking about upgrading to the 3gs. I had no idea I could sell my used 3g for the prices I'm seeing on ebay.

Makes the idea of upgrading much more appealing.

14. Yes. The 3GS will have full 4.0 functionality. Older models will have much, but not all. nt

16. Lol, so they're now copying Android?
Multitasking? Check.
Skype? Check.
System class notifiations? Check. (I hope GOOG patented that one to countersue Apple with)
Unified mailbox? Check.
High security? Been there since day one.
Ad based revenue system for app developers? Check!

Android is a smaller market than the iPhone, but Android marketshare has been growing at a greater rate than Apple ever enjoyed, and has achieved its current marketshare in half the time that Apple took to reach the same marketshare. Android's popularity over iPhone for many users can be attributed directly to the fact that it included ALL of these features right out of the starting gate. Android is the first really credible threat to Apples marketshare, and they're reacting by duplicating some of its best features.

If GOOG was smart (and I have little doubt that they are), many of these features would have been patented. With Apple suing Google over the claimed violation of THEIR IP, you can bet Google will be returning the favor.

19. No, they're 'copying' the computer.
Which is all smartphone makers goal.

And as for gadget makers leapfrogging each other's features. Yep. That's what they do.

Security ebbs and flows with gadgets as well. But all platforms have risks. Like that phishing 'banking' app that was posted in the Android app store. It was identified. Eventually.
