5. Here's the thing - and it's kind of a shocker, I know. Phelps was a civil rights lawyer

at one time. I think he was disbarred later on. He was an advocate for civil rights in the 1960's. He did a lot of work with the NAACP and for African-American clients.


Is he still a bigoted piece of shit? Duh! Of course he is....but that might explain the KKK's dislike of him.

Phelps did handle several civil rights cases in the 1980s; the link above suggests they were more remunerative for him than for his clients, and since he spent time at Bob Jones, his "equal opportunity" credentials are somewhat suspect, I think

Phelps' gang figures it can get airtime by showing up to spout hate wherever there's a news story; the KKK sees Phelps' gang getting attention and decides to try to grab some attention for themselves by denouncing it. If somebody, who expects Hitler to return with an Armada of UFOs to save Germany, tells me that the KKK is full of shit, I'll be similarly disinterested: the KKK is full of shit, but I already know it and really don't need other wackos to tell me that, just as I don't need the KKK sadsacks to tell me that Phelps' gang stinks like a hogfarm lagoon
