Opus Dei purchases $7.45M townhouse to "guide" women.
Mysterious Catholic organization Opus Dei is behind the $7.45 million purchase of a townhouse at 31 E. 38th St., around the corner from its headquarters. The house was bought by the Rosemoor Foundation, whose Web site says it funds "cultural centers and activities whose origin and mission are inspired by the Catholic Prelature of Opus Dei." The foundation bought the place from hedge-funder Albert J. Fitzgibbins III, a founder of Stonington Partners. A neighbor told us, "There were fears they would use it as a halfway house for the rehabilitation of pedophile priests." But a spokesman for Opus Dei -- which was scandalized in what many considered an inaccurate portrayal in "The Da Vinci Code" -- said the house would be used "as a residence for women where they would be offered philosophical, theological and spiritual guidance." Calls to Rosemoor and Fitzgibbins were not returned.

i.e., branching from pedophilia to prostitution, are we?

Ooh, I can just see that disgusting Scalia planning for the "guidance" of woman to be housed there. Bleah

6. "The Family" must be short of properly submissive females.
They need a minor league camp to indoctrinate the lesser sex into the ways of authoritarianism.

Sarcasm, for those whose heads are exploding.

40. They may want a cadre of bright, well-spoken women who know their place in the hierarchy....
... and are good marriage material for the male lay OP members moving into public leadership positions. I don't know if women are ever groomed for public life in Opus Dei. In any case, for that kind of money this is not going to be a Magdalene House for Wayward Women.

That would be my bet, and absolutely no sarcasm intended.

As for prostitution, I think an awful lot of the priesthood at this point has been so thoroughly indoctrinated that women are icky because we all inherit the Sin of Eve, that those lost souls can only bring themselves to touch little boys adolescent boys in that manner.

4. I can only assume their philosophical, theological and spiritual guidance will be "you'll be so much
happier if you stop worrying your pretty little head about these things. Stay home, cook, clean, have babies one after another. Do as your husband and the church asks and you will fulfill your duty to Christ and the Church."

13. No. I'll bet they are trying to get women into the religious life first being
that there is a shortage these days of young women willing to sacrifice everything and take the veil to educate other people's children. Your scenario is secondary, only if those women can't do the first. I know. I went to Catholic schools and was subjected to these choices.

Not sure if they've adopted the burqa, but it would hardly shock me. :eyes:

although I can't see anyone wearing these today, except extremists/traditionalists like Opus Dei members.

This is just rampant anti Catholic nonsense. Opus Die is no more mysterious than the Boy Scouts of America. It is no more nefarious either.

21. Why should I have to "persuade" someone from to abandon mindless prejudice?
Not my job to counter prejudice, its the job of the person spewing the filth to defend the horseshit they put in print.

28. Not nefarious? I suggest you do some research. Start with ex-cult
members at ODAN, and read up on just how anti-woman these assholes are.

If you think recruiting minors and corporal mortification is okay, then you've obviously picked the right religion.

17. Yeah, the men need cleaning ladies
What? You didn't know that?

The males in Opus Dei clear out of their townhouse for several hours a week so that women in Opus Dei can come in and clean up after them.

That's how bizarrely sexist those people are.

18. What, exactly, can people who torture THEMSELVES, offer as guidance?
Philosophical, theological and spiritual, are three areas where you can be sure your "guide" knows no more than you do. It's kind of a counter-deprogramming facility.
