2. They initially made the money to buy their "church"

because Phelps is a lawyer who specialized in nuisance suits and accepted payouts to make him go away. He started that "church" as a tax dodge for himself and now his family, who are pretty much it for membership.

The IRS needs to tax that one first, it's such an obvious dodge.

Their father forced them into the profession so they could make a routine habit of suing anyone who ever tried to stop any of their actions. Of course, they always win their cases on the basis of First Amendment Rights, and the damages they collect go toward keeping their empire going. It's a tidy way to make a living.
