Spokane bans cheap beer, wine sales downtown

Spokane bans cheap beer, wine sales downtown

Thirty-two low-cost, high-alcohol beers and wines can no longer be sold in downtown Spokane beginning May 15.

The state Liquor Control Board Wednesday approved a Spokane city request to establish an alcohol impact area along a broad section of downtown.

Under the ban, liquor licensees and the area's single liquor store will be prevented from selling cheap high-octane products for off-premise consumption.

The action comes after adoption of an ordinance by the Spokane City Council last December creating the impact zone and seeking liquor board approval.

...

He said banning the cheap higher-alcohol products to "chronic public inebriants" might result in a greater sense of safety for the wider public, and that may actually benefit the restricted merchants by bringing more business to the downtown area.

5. i agree. but this is WA
where we bully the raw milk people, tell private businesses like bars that they cannot allow smoking, and that people can't smoke within 25 FEET of the entrance to buildings (effectively making the entire downtown seattle an illegal smoking zone), and we make online poker a C FELONY but have no problem with people gambling on poker, if it's at a casino where the state gets a nice cut

welcome to WA

drive through

6. What is sad is how so many liberals are all for such control of others
Pro-choice appears only to matter on one topic for many.

9. i hear you and i agree
man, do i agree.

i think many of those on the left (and certainly many on the right) deserve a healthy slap of librertarian principles.

it is one thing to say behavior X is unhealthy, whether it's a rightwing cause (like pr0n, or "gangsta rap") or a leftwing cause (smoking in bars, etc.) and then say IT DOES NOT MEAN THE GOVT SHOULD STEP IN AND TELL PEOPLE HOW TO LIVE VIA THE BARREL OF A GUN

the poker thing is especially galling. i did VERY well at online poker (being a student of game theory, statistics, and psychology - i am naturally very good at it) and had to stop playing.

they made it a C FELONY.

the gambling commission said they did not INTEND TO ENFORCE THE LAW

iow, it was passed for effect, as a nod to tribal casinos and state coffers out of alleged concern to protect people from themselves (god forbid somebody spends a few hours on a saturday night playing a $2 online tournament when they could be buying a bunch of state sponsored gambling scratch tickets at their local convenience store (rolls eyes)

8. Telling people where to smoke?

Well only if you exhale.

Second hand smoke has had a disasterous impact on the health of employees of bars where they have to breath the smoke of others.

It is absolutely responsible to tell people that they cannot smoke where other people are employed, everybody has the right to work in a smoke free environment.
